Softball Splits with Rio Grande University

The Lady Pioneers traveled to Rio Grande, OH to take on the Lady Redmen of Rio Grande University.  The first contest was tight, with GSC scoring the winning run in the top of the 7th to take the game 2-1.  RGU rebounded to take the second game 7-1.

In the first game, the GSC line-up featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell at short, Lorrie Chaperon designated hitter, Stacy Mack in center field, Beth Moore at first, Jade Jean at third, Amy Carte in right field, Candace White catching, Deidra Wallace in left field, and Kayla Shobe on the mound.

Neither team scored in the 1st inning.  In the top of the 2nd, Beth Moore walked to give GSC a baserunner on first, then advanced to third when Jade Jean’s hit to center field created problems for the RGU defense.  Amy Carte then singled to score Moore.  Jade Jean was thrown out at home when she attempted to steal after Amy Carte stole second base successfully.  Candace White reached first on another RGU error which allowed Carte to advance to third.  Deidra Wallace popped up to the pitcher, and Leanne Harris grounded out to the pitcher for the 2nd and 3rd outs of the inning.

The Lady Redmen took advantage of 1 hit and 2 GSC errors in the bottom of the 2nd to score 1 run and tie the score 1-1.  Both teams managed hits, but neither team scored any runs.  In the top of the 7th, with 2 outs, Leanne Harris walked to reach first, and then stole second to give GSC a runner in scoring position.  A past ball allowed Harris to take third.  Lacey Powell walked to give the Lady Pioneers runners on the corners.  In the next at bat, Powell got into an intentional run-down situation, and delayed the out long enough to allow Harris to score the game-winning run.

RGU’s first batter singled, but the Lady Pioneer defense held strong to get the next three batters out and take the win 2-1.  Kayla Shobe earned the win on the mound, facing 30 batters in 7 innings of work.  She scattered 7 hits, gave up 1 run, 1 walk, and recorded 2 strikeouts.

In the second contest, the Lady Pioneer line-up changes included Lorrie Chaperon at short, Kayla Shobe at third, Stacy Mack designated hitter, Jade Jean at first, Elizabeth Randolph in right field, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, Alysha Lavey in center field, and Tiffany Bush on the mound.

After GSC stranded 1 runner in the top of the 1st, the Lady Redmen scored 1 run on 0 hits in the bottom of the inning.  The Lady Pioneers went 3 up, 3 down in the top of the 2nd, and Rio Grande used 4 hits and 1 error to score 3 runs and take the score to 4-0.  RGU scored 3 more runs in the 4th on 3 hits and 1 GSC error.

The Lady Pioneers managed to score 1 run in the top of the 5th.  With 1 out, Candace White singled.  Alysha Lavey reached on a fielder’s choice when the RGU defense chose to put out White at second.  Leanne Harris’ single advanced Lavey to second, then Lorrie Chaperon singled to load the bases.  Kayla Shobe’s single advanced everyone and brought in Lavey.  Stacy Mack popped up to the first baseman to end the inning.  The Lady Pioneers couldn’t manage any more runs, and the final score was 7-1.

Tiffany Bush took the loss for GSC.  She pitched 1.1 innings, gave up 3 hits and 4 runs.  Karly Eskew finished the game on the mound, pitching for 4.2 innings.  She faced 19 batters, gave up 4 hits and 3 runs, and recorded 2 strikeouts.

The Lady Pioneers face Rio Grande again this Friday, this time at home.  The game versus Mountain State University, scheduled for Wednesday, April 25th was canceled.
