Softball Drops Two to Alderson-Broaddus

The Lady Pioneers looked to continue their strong WVIAC start by winning one or both of their games against conference power Alderson-Broaddus College, but fell in both contests by scores of 3-4 and 1-4.

In the first game, the Lady Pioneer line up featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell at short stop, Meagan James at third, Stacy Mack in center field, Beth Moore at first, Lorrie Chaperon designated hitter, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, Candice White catching, Karly Eskew in right field, and Mandy Parkulo on the mound.

AB scored first in the second inning, but the Lady Pioneers answered back quickly in the bottom of the second.  With two outs, Lorrie Chaperon singled, then was brought home by Jessica Gilchrist’s double to tie the score 1-1.  Then, with Gilchrist on 2nd, Candice White singled to score Gilchrist and put the Pioneers up by 1.  AB got out of the inning without any further damage when Karly Eskew grounded out to short.

AB scored again in the top of the third to tie the score 2-2, then scored again in the fifth to take a one-run lead.  In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Candice White singled and was advanced to second base by Karly Eskew’s sacrifice bunt.  Leanne Harris doubled to score White and tie the score 3-3, but was stranded when Lacey Powell struck out.  The Battler’s scored in the top of the sixth to take the lead 4-3.  Unfortunately, the Lady Pioneers went hitless for the rest of the game and lost by the final score of 4-3.

In the second game, Coach Moore put Jade Jean at first and started Tiffany Bush on the mound.  AB got things going in the first inning, as they scored 1 run on 2 hits.  The Lady Pioneers didn’t get a hit until the third inning, when Jessica Gilchrist singled.  Karly Eskew sacrificed to move Gilchrist to second.  She was left on base however, as GSC couldn’t manufacture another hit to bring her in and AB got out of the inning without giving up a run.

Neither team had a hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, Mandy Parkulo took the mound to finish the game.  In the top of the seventh, AB capitalized on a batter hit by a pitch and a wild pitch, and a double and a single to score 3 runs on 2 hits.  In the bottom of the seventh, Lacey Powell reached first on an AB error.  Meagan James popped up to the second baseman for the 1st out of the inning.  Stacy Mack doubled and Powell advanced to third.  Jade Jean’s sacrifice fly scored Powell, but Lorrie Chaperon struck out to strand Mack on the bases.  The final score was 4-1.

The Lady Pioneers’ games with Ohio Valley University–originally scheduled for Sunday–have been moved to Tuesday.  Game time is 5:00 pm.
