SB Splits with Wheeling Jesuit

The Lady Pioneers took their 5-1 WVIAC record into their double header with the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit and came out with a split decision, dropping the first game 7-8 in 8 innings and winning the second 4-1.

In the first game, the Lady Pioneers’ batting order featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell in left, Meagan James at third, Stacy Mack in center field, Kayla Shobe on the mound, Lorrie Chaperon at short, Beth Moore designated hitter, Candice White behind the plate, Karly Eskew at first, and Deidra Wallace in right field.

GSC scored first in the contest in the top of the 1st inning.  After Leanne Harris popped up to the pitcher, Lacey Powell reached first after she was hit by a pitch, but was thrown out on a fielder’s choice on Meagan James’ single.  James advanced to second on a Cardinal throwing error on the play.  Stacy Mack reached first on an error by WJU’s third baseman and James scored.  The next GSC batter grounded out to end the GSC at bat.

WJU quickly responded by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning on a triple, two singles, a batter hit by pitch, and another single.  Not happy with the inning, Coach Moore changed up his pitching to get out of the inning, replacing Kayla Shobe with Mandy Parkulo.  GSC managed to get out of the inning without any further damage, with the score 3-1.

GSC scored again in the 3rd to tie the score 3-3, as Leanne Harris started off the inning with a double.  Lacey Powell grounded out to the short stop for the first out of the inning, but Harris advanced to third on the play.  Stacy Mack’s single scored Harris to bring the score to 3-2.  The Lady Pioneers scored another run in the 4th when Leanne Harris singled to bring in Lorrie Chaperon, who had singled in the first at-bat of the inning.

Once again, WJU answered back immediately, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to make the score 6-3.  The Lady Pioneers had a very strong 6th inning, as Beth Moore started things off with a single.  Amy Carte came in to run the bases for Moore.  Jade Jean pinch hit for Candice White and singled to advance Carte to second.  Candice White then came back in to run the bases for Jean.  WJU’s coach, not happy with the situation, changed pitchers.  The change had no effect on the Pioneers, as Karly Eskew singled to advance White to second and Carte to third.  With the bases loaded, Leanne Harris singled to move the runners forward and score Amy Carte.  Lacey Powell reached on a fielder’s choice, Harris was out at second, and White scored.  Meagan James singled to advance Powell to third and score Eskew.  Stacy Mack walked, then Mandy Parkulo reached on a fielders choice as WJU threw out Mack at second.  On the play, Meagan James advanced to third, and Lacey Powell scored.  By the end of the inning, the Lady Pioneers had scored 4 runs on 5 hits and stranded 3 runners.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals scored one to tie the score 7-7.  Although the Lady Pioneers got 2 hits in the seventh, both runners were stranded as they failed to capitalize on the opportunity.  In the top of the eight, GSC had a 3 up, 3 down inning, and the Cardinals took advantage in the bottom of the eight as they scored to end the game with a final score of 8-7.

In the second contest, the Lady Pioneer batting order featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell in left, Meagan James designated hitter, Stacy Mack in center, Jade Jean at first base, Lorrie Chaperon at short, Kayla Shobe at third, Candice White catching, Amy Carte in right field, and Tiffany Bush on the mound.

In the 1st inning, Lacey Powell singled, then scored on Meagan James’ double.  Stacy Mack walked, then Lorrie Chaperon walked to load the bases.  WJU got out of the inning when Kayla Shobe grounded out to second base.  The Lady Pioneers scored 1, and stranded 3 runners.

GSC scored again in the 2nd inning, as Amy Carte singled, then moved to second on Leanne Harris’ sacrifice bunt.  Lacey Powell doubled to score Carte.  After Powell stole third, Meagan James grounded out to end the inning.  In the 3rd, Jade Jean singled, and Deidra Wallace came in to run the bases for Jean.  Wallace advanced on a past ball, then advanced to third when Lorrie Chaperon singled.  Kayla Shobe reached first on a fielders choice as WJU got Chaperon at second, but allowed Shobe to advance on a WJU throwing error, and Wallace scored.

With the score 3-0, GSC’s pitching and defense continued to hold WJU scoreless through the 4th, when the Cardinals managed to score 1 run.  In the sixth, with 1 out, GSC scored their 4th and final run of the game as Candice White and Amy Carte reached on a pair of walks.  Leanne Harris singled to load the bases.  A WJU error allowed Lacey Powell to take first on her at bat, and Candice White scored.  Once again, the Pioneers stranded 3 baserunners as WJU managed to limit the Lady Pioneers to 1 run.  The bottom of the 6th and the 7th inning were uneventful, and the Lady Pioneers took the second game of the double header 4-1.

The Lady Pioneers are now 8-18 overall, 6-2 in the WVIAC.  They will face the Falcons of Fairmont State University this Thursday at 4:00 pm.
