(INSTITUTE, WV) — The Glenville State Pioneers suffered their first loss on the young season, a 87-80 setback to the WV State Yellow Jackets. The Pioneers squad was again impressive in spurts, but was unable to overcome All American Ted Scott’s 42 points. Scott, who sat out last season with a torn ACL, connected on 14 of 21 field goal attempts and 13 of 15 free throws.
GSC, who had five players reach double figures, was paced by Jamal Holden’s 20 points, 17 points from Anthony Kimble, 15 from Tryvan Leech, 14 from Chase Groves and 12 from Gabe Gibbs.
Holden as pulled down six rebounds and six assists with only one turnover.
The Pioneers held tight throughout a poor shooting performance from behind the arc. GSC shot just 25%, connecting on 6 of 24 3 point attempts.
The 1st half saw a back and forth affair with WV State jumping out to a 26-16 margin with 11:23 left to play. Leech would add 13 points and Holden chipped in 11, to tie the game up at 42 all before settling on a halftime score of 44-42.
The 2nd half was all Ted Scott. He scored 24 of the Yellow Jackets 43 points in the half.
Trailing 53-57 with 13:06 to go in the game, Scott completely took over. The Senior from Columbus, Ohio would score 18 of the next 22 points from WV State, to erase the deficit and push their lead to 80-73 with 4:02 to go.
WVSU would finish hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the last minute to ice the game.
