Lady Pioneers Start Season off with a Bang

The Glenville State College Lady Pioneers opened up the 2010-11 basketball season on the road at Elizabeth City, North Carolina as they took part in the CIAA/ WVIAC Basketball Challenge.

On Friday November 12th the Lady Pioneers took to the court against the Virginian Union Lady Panthers. The Lady Pioneers didn’t waste anytime starting where they left off last year. The Lady Pioneers built a significant halftime lead with Beth Deren and Kenyell Goodson both racking up 11 points in the first half as the Lady Pioneers took the lead 58 – 35.
In the second half the Lady Pioneers again rolled over the competition as the Lady Pioneers had six girls score in double figures. Goodson led the attack with 17 points; she also grabbed a team high 6 rebounds.
Beth Deren finished the game with 14 points, while Kim Stephens finished with 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting on the night. Autumn Davis chipped in with 11 points, while Danielle Woodmore and Kristen Golden both finished with 10 points as the Lady Pioneers rolled to a 102-70 win starting the season 1-0.
On day two the Lady Pioneers battled the Shaw University Bears. The Lady Pioneers didn’t start as well as game one as they only led at the half 48-44.
Both teams played a fast pace and shots were fired often and from all parts of the court.  Shaw took 80 shots, 23 of them from three-point range, while Glenville State took 90, 43 of which came from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Lady Pioneers built an 11-point lead, but the Lady Bears fought back, cutting the lead to only one when Victoria Tanner hit a pair of free throws with 6:54 left in the game.
But the Lady Pioneers sprinted into the lead again, and two minutes later held a nine-point advantage.  The Lady Bears could not pull any closer than that as the Lady Pioneers won 88-78.
Danielle Woodmore led the Lady Pioneers with 17 points, Autumn Davis had 14, and Tenisha Wilson 12.  Kristen Golden and Woodmore led Glenville with eight rebounds apiece. Woodmore also had six assists.
With the win GSC moves to 2-0 on the year, they return to action November 16th when they travel to Ohio Valley for their first conference match of the year, tipoff is set for 5:30PM.
