Charleston Holds on to Defeat the Pioneers, 107-100

The University of Charleston shot a scorching 55 percent from the field in racing past Glenville State, 107-100 tonight in WVIAC MBB action. Robert Strickland paced five Golden Eagles in double figures with 27 points and Marquis Brooks scored 24 points as UC improved to 16-7 Overall and 10-6 in WVIAC play.
The Pioneers, who lost 2nd leading scorer Mykail Vibbert to a knee injury in the 2nd half, was led by Tryvan Leech’s 25 points and Anthony Kimble’s 21 points and seven rebounds. With the loss Glenville State falls to 8-15 Overall and 6-10 in WVIAC play.
The first 20 minutes were all UC as after a GSC three pointer by Michael Hurd tied the game at 8 all, the Golden Eagles went on a quick 13 to 5 spurt to push the lead up to eight and they would coast into halftime up 11 at 50-39.
UC shot an excellent 57.9 percent from the field, and 42.9 percent from the three point line.
Charleston would open the second half much like most of the first half and after Strickland knocked down a jumper, UC would have its biggest lead of the contest at 14, 60-46 with 13:55 left in the game.
The Pioneers would make things interesting as they would put together a run of their own. A Hurd 3 pointer and a Kimble layup would quickly have the lead back to nine. After missed Brooks’ jumper, Leech would convert on a slashing layup and then convert again on a three pointer after Allen Boyd stripped UC’s Strickland.
The two teams would trade baskets on their next two possessions. After two Brooks free throws the Eagles lead was at 5, 64-59 with 11:02 to go.
Lebron Caslin would drain a three and Leech would follow up an Austin Witherspoon layup with a triple of his own to cut the lead to a single point.
UC’s Warren Wallace would hit a jumper to push the lead back to three. However Wallace would quickly undo the good dead as he would pick up a quick foul and follow that up with a technical foul.
GSC’s Boyd and Leech would each drain a pair free throws to give the Pioneers a one point lead at 68-69 lead with 10:25 to go as Glenville outscored UC 23-8 over a 3 minute and 30 second span.
Strickland would score on the next two possessions, to push the lead to three. Leech would hit a free throw and Taron Hurst would tip in a missed Hurd three point attempt to even the game at 72 all with 8:12 to go. This would be the closet that GSC would be the rest of the way.
Following the Hurst tip in, Strickland would drain a three pointer, and Brooks would follow a Caslin miss to quickly push the lead to six.
The Pioneers would not go away as Leech again would find his stroke from the outside knocking down a long three and Boyd would get in the lane and convert the layup to cut it back to one with 6:42 to go.
Charleston would quickly get the lead back to six and force the Pioneers to begin to foul. The Golden Eagles were clutch in the last two minutes as they converted 15 of 18 free throw attempts.
GSC for the game shot 47.9 percent from the field and 36.1 percent (13 of 36) three point attempts. The Pioneers had a season low 10 turnovers, but were out done by UC’s six miscues.
The Pioneers play host to Concord this Thursday, Tip Off is at 7:30 pm.
