Pioneers Battle, Fall to WV State in OT

(Institute, WV) – The Glenville State Pioneers battled before eventually falling to WV State, 92-87 in overtime. James Helton led five Yellow Jackets in double figures with 28 points on 5 of 7 from 3pt range. Charles Hensley added a spark of the bench going 6 for 9 for 17 points.
The Pioneers Anthony Kimble led all scorers with 36 points on 16 of 26 from the field and he also added nine rebounds. Mykail Vibbert recorded a double – double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as the GSC fell to 4-9 and 2-4 in conference play.
WV State jumped all over the Pioneers in the 1st half as they led by as many as 10 on three different occasion before taking a 54-46 lead into the locker room. The Yellow Jackets, who shot a scorching 64% from the field in the half, got 15 points from Helton and 12 points from Hensley. Kimble and Michael Hurd did their part to keep it close as they combined for 33(Kimble – 22, Hurd – 11) of the Pioneers 46 1st half points.
The Yellow Jackets opened the 2nd half much like it ended the first quickly ballooning the lead to 11 points, at 67-56 over the first six minutes. Trailing 74-65, the Pioneers would go on a 17-3 run and find themselves leading 82-77 with 1:41 remaining after a huge Vibbert three pointer. WVSU’s Helton would quickly answer with a clutch three of his own, to pull the Yellow Jackets within two with 1:30 to go.
After a missed layup by Chase Groves, the Pioneers would pick up two quick fouls and send Hensley to the line for a 1 and 1. Hensley calming sank both knotting the game at 82 all with 34 seconds to go. Kimble’s jumper and Marcus Catney’s tip in would both come up empty sending the game to overtime.
The overtime period saw the GSC grab early 2pt lead on a Kimble tip-in off a Vibbert missed jumper. Senior Wade Pidock would answer with a big 3 to give State the lead at 85-84 with 2:29 to go in the extra period. The relentless Pioneers would not go away easily as after a WV State timeout, Kimble would find Vibbert on the wing for a huge 3 pointer, putting Glenville on top, 87-85 with 1:30 to go.
Kimble would then miss a jumper which was rebounded by WVSU’s Tim Contee, who was quickly fouled by Kimble. Contee would drain both of his FT attempts. On the ensuing possession, Hurd’s 3pt attempt was long and Perrick Robinson would gather the rebound and be fouled. After a Yellow Jackets timeout, Robinson would miss the front end of a 1 & 1; however a turnover by Deon Briscoe would seal the fate of the Pioneers. Two WVSU free throws with .1 seconds remaining would give the final score.
For the game the Pioneers shot 46% from field and 36% from the 3pt line.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they play host to the Griffins of Seton Hill. Tip-Off is at 7:30 pm.
