The Glenville State College men’s basketball program used a major league defensive effort that lead them to a 65-63 victory overt host Shepherd on Saturday night. With the win, the Pioneers move to 2-2 in WVIAC. The 63 points scored by Shepherd was 12 points below their season average.
Shepherd jumped out to a 15-9 lead eight minutes into the game, which would be their largest lead in the contest. The Pioneers then put together a 17-4 run over the next six minutes, taking a 26-19 lead. They would never trail for the remainder of the game and led 35-34 at intermission.
The second half saw the Pioneers use a 6-0 spurt in the first 4:30 as they pushed their lead to 41-34. Shepherd would chip away, eventually cutting the Pioneer advantage to 48-47 with 3:46 to play. The Pioneers responded after a timeout with seven unanswered points to lead 55-47 with five minutes to play.
Shepherd would continue fighting back, trimming their deficit to one poitn at 57-56 with 1:42 to play, but the Pioneers converted six of seven free throws down the stretch for the victory.
The third ranked offense in the country never could get in a rhythm as the Pioneers shot only 41% from the field and 33% from long range. They did perform well at the free throw line as they converted 21 of 29 attempts.
However, it was the defense that was the story for the Pioneers. They held Shepherd to 37% shooting, including 25% from long range. Shepherd did outrebound the Pioneers 38-37.
Individually, the Pioneers were led by Anthony Kimble’s 14 points and eight rebounds. Mykail Vibbert added 12 points and seven rebounds while Marcus Catney tallied 11 points and five rebounds. In all, 10 different PIoneers scored in the contest.
GLenville State will travel to Buckhannon, WV to play WV Wesleyan College on Monday, January 14, 2008 at 7:30pm.
