The up and down Lady Pioneers hit a new low tonight as they were shocked on the road 55 to 53 by the host Bluefield State Lady Blues. Poor shooting, sloppy ball handling and an inabilty to rebound all led to the disapointing loss. Mallory Menendez led all scorers with 16 points as GSC played without starter Donita Adams’ who suffered a broken nose in the blowout loss to UC on thursday.
Beth Deren was the only other Lady Pioneer in double figures as she had 10 points, while grabbing six rebounds for Glenville State who falls to 8-14 Overall and 6-10 in the WVIAC.
The BSC Lady Blues were paced by 13 bench points from Monah Cherry and 10 points from Tamikka Jefferies.
Both teams hand major problems taking care of the basketball as they combined for 55 turnovers (28 from GSC and 27 from BSC).
Bluefield State would shot 50% in the first half en route to grabbing a 29-22 lead at intermission.
The Lady Pioneers would battle back as they held BSC off the scoreboard for the first 5:20 of the second half and would grab the lead at 36-35 with 12:03 to go.
The back and forth battle would see GSC grab a one point lead, 53-52, on a Deren three from the corner with 2:14 left in the ball game.
Both teams would trade turnovers, before Cherry would knot the game at 53 all by hitting the second her two free throws.
Following a Kristen Golden turnover, BSC would nail the winning bucket as Angelica Kimbraugh would sink a 15 footer from the right side with 27 seconds left.
GSC would have one last look, but Menendez’s deep three would misfire.
For the game the Pioneers shot just 38% from the field and were outrebounded 33-26.
Glenville will play host to non conference foe Urbana, this Monday. Tip Off is 6 p.m.
