The Lady Pioneers snapped a two game skid in a big way by upsetting WVIAC leading University of Pitt – Johnstown, 80-75, tonight at Lilly Gymnasium. Mallory Menendez led the way for Glenville with 17 points, as GSC shot a scorching 51.7% in the second half to run past the Lady Cats.
Lady Pioneers Upset UPJ
Donita Adams scored 14, Kristen Golden came off the bench to add 12, and Christine DiSabato added 11 and Beth Deren chipped in 10 as the Lady Pioneers improved to 7-12 Overall and 5-8 in the WVIAC.
Sheena Aden scored a game high 22 points to pace UPJ as they fell to 13-7 Overall and 11-2 in the WVIAC. Monae Baker came off the bench to score 17 and grab 13 rebounds, Andrea Dalton had 14 and Lindsay Cale scored 11 points as Pitt-Johnstown shot just 32.1% in the second half.
UPJ would race out to a huge first half lead, and after an Aden jumper the Lady Cats would lead 34-16 with 6:05 to go.
The Pioneers would counter with a 17-10 run over the rest of the half to go into the locker room down 11, 44-33.
The second half would begin much like how the first half ended, with Glenville State on a run. The Lady Pioneers would outscore UPJ 19-7 over the first 5:46 to grab the lead at 52-51.
Pitt Johnstown would answer back with a 5-0 spur t and after a Dalton free throw they would lead again at 58-54 with 11:40 to go.
After the two teams would trade free throws Glenville State would go on a 9-0 run, capped off by a DiSabato triple that put them up six, 65-59 with 7:51 left.
Not to be out done, UPJ would again claw back, this time with a 9-2 run as Aden would hit a driving layup to make it 68-67 with 4:27 left to go.
Tied at 71-71 all the Lady Pioneers would grab the lead for good on a Suzy Harvey jumper.
GSC returns to action this Monday as they travel to Vienna to take on Ohio Valley.
