Lady Pioneers Fall to WV State

 

The Lady Pioneers again fell victim to a late second half run as they fell to WV State, 68-64 in WVIAC Women’s action tonight from Lilly Gymnasium. Brittany Mingo led all scorers with 33 points and eight rebounds as she connected on 10 of 14 from the field and 13 of 15 from the line.
The Lady Pioneers were paced by another excellent performance off the bench from Suzi Harvey as she contributed 16 points and seven boards. Donita Adams added 13 points and six rebounds, while Kristen Golden added 10 points and hauled in seven rebounds, before both fouled out late. Mallory Menendez scored eight while recording seven assists, as GSC fell to 6-11 Overall and 4-7 in the WVIAC.
Sharena Atkinson added 10 points for WV State as they improved to 9-9 Overall and 8-5 in WVIAC play.
The first half saw the Lady Pioneers lead by as many as 10 before settling on a 34-29 halftime lead.
The Lady Jackets would open the second half on an 11-5 run to grab a brief one point lead, 40-39 with 15:01 left.
Glenville State would quickly counter with a 10-2 spurt of their own to go back on top by seven, 49-42, with 12:40 left in the game.
WVSU would slowly claw back and would eventually grab the lead for good on a pair of Mingo free throws with 3:18 left.
GSC would miss their last five field goals and a crucial front end of a one and one, trailing 65-64 with 16 seconds to go.
Mingo would then sink 3 of 4 foul shots to seal the deal.
For the game the Lady Pioneers shot 41.9% from the field, compared to 40.7% for WV State. The Yellow Jackets would connect on 20 of 26 free throw attempts compared to just 5 of 10 for Glenville.
The Lady Pioneers return to action this Monday as they play host to WV Wesleyan. Tip Off is 5:30.
