The Lady Pioneers fell to West Liberty State by a score of 74-66 tonight at Lilly Gymnasium. The Lady Toppers Laura Malernee paced five West Lib players in double figures with 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting from behind the arc.
Glenville State was led by a game high 22 points from Mallory Menendez as they fall to 5-9 Overall and 3-5 in the WVIAC. Beth Deren added 12 points and Christine DiSabato came off the bench to contribute 10.
The Hilltoppers used a key 14-0 run in the middle of the first half to grab a 38-31 lead at intermission as Malernee would connect on five triples in the first frame. 16 Glenville turnovers in the half would lead to 20 WLSC points.
The 2nd half lead for West Liberty would swell to 11 at the 10:11 mark on a Tori Hansen three point play.
The Lady Pioneers would battle back as they would then mount an 11-2 run over the next 3:37. After a Suzi Harvey three point play of her own, GSC would trail 58-57 with 6:24 to go.
The two teams would trade buckets before layups by Evelyn Woods and Hansen would push the lead back up to 5. Menendez would drain a triple to cut it back to two with 1:59 left, but the Lady Pioneers would get no closer.
Cassie Smith would hit a layup and Melernee would drain her seventh 3 pointer to put the game out of reach.
For the game the Glenville would shoot 41% from the field, while WLSC connected on 48% of their attempts. The Pioneers overcame 24 turnovers, by shooting 57.9% (11-19) from behind the arc and holding a 42-29 advantage on the boards.
GSC returns to action this Monday as they travel to Greensburg, PA to take on Seton Hill. Tip Off is at 6:00.
