The Lady Pioneers rallied from a double digit deficit as they came back to defeat the Lady Storm of Lake Erie College, 71-68, this afternoon at Lilly Gymnasium. Mallory Menendez paced GSC with 19 points and Beth Deren added 13 points off the bench.
Lake Erie College (5-14) got a game high 26 points and 11 rebounds from Stephanie Rogers as she connected on 7 of 11 field goal attempts and 12 of 14 free throws. Jen Caiola added 18 points and Alyssa Wagers chipped in eight points and 13 rebounds.
Both teams were ice cold in the 1st half as the Pioneers grabbed a 29-25 lead at intermission. GSC connected on just 29% of its attempts in the half, while LEC hit just 8 of 21(21.1%) in the opening half.
The Pioneers would push their lead to four, 35-31, with 18:14 to go. The Storm would then go on a 20-6 over the next 5:30 to grab a 51-41 lead with 12:18 to go.
Two Rogers’ free throws would give LEC a nine point cushion, 59-50, with 5:17 remaining.
Glenville State would then go on an 11-2 spurt over the next two minutes to push to 61 all after a three pointer by Deren.
After trading a pair of free throws and field goals, the Lady Pioneers would grab the lead for good on a Donita Adams free throw, to make it 67-65.
Deren would hit 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Both teams turned the ball over 17 times, while Lake Erie held a 53-43 rebounding margin.
GSC outshot the Storm 34.9% to 29.2%.
The Lady Pioneers return to action this Thursday as they play host to Wheeling Jesuit. Tip Off is at 5:30 PM
