Poor 2nd Half Start Does In Lady Pioneers

The Lady Pioneers shot just 28.3% from the field as they fell on the road tonight, 68-51, to Urbana University. The Lady Knights used a big 2nd half run to pull away from Glenville State.
Mallory Menendez had a game high 16 points, and also pulled down five rebounds. The Pioneers again struggled to take care of the ball, as they had 23 turnovers, 5 more than their season average. Beth Deren and Christine DiSabato each had 9 points and Tanya Melhorn chipped in 8 as GSC dropped to 2-4 Overall.
Urbana’s Jessica Byrd paced four players in double digits with 11 points. Tia Simms, Haley Ducey and Enisia Curry each had 10 points a piece.
The taller Urbana squad dominated Glenville on the boards, out rebounding GSC 52-35, including 23 offensive rebounds.
The Pioneers held leads throughout the first half, the largest being a five point advantage at 17-12 with 9:06 to go. A Beth Deren jumper would make it 26-24 with 1:20 left in the half, this would be the last lead of the game for the Lady Pioneers.
After the two teams would trade turnovers, the Blue Knights would turn an offensive rebound into a Byrd 3pointer to make it 27-26 at the break.
GSC would fall apart to open the 2nd half. Over the opening 9:06 of the half the deficit would swell from one to 14 as the Pioneers would go 2 for 14 from the field while turning the ball over six times.
The UU lead would get as many as 23 before settling on the final.
