The Lady Pioneers battled back to win their home opener, 60-55, over the University of D.C. Firebirds this afternoon at Lilly Gymnasium. Senior Mallory Menendez paced GSC with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, including hitting five of eight 3pt attempts.
Senior Christine DiSabato added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Sophomore Suzi Harvey added 13 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Pioneers improved 2-3 Overall and 1-1 in the WVIAC.
Lillian McGill paced the Lady Firebirds with 17 points, and LaQuanda Brandon added 10.
Glenville State was sluggish out the gate as they feel behind 20-9, 9 minutes in. GSC would quickly go on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Menendez triple, to cut it to 20-18.
The Pioneers would grab a brief lead at the 1:28 mark as DiSabato would hit two free throws, before settling on a 30-30 halftime score.
GSC was again slow getting started, as UDC would open the 2nd half on a 16-4, topped off with a Brandon Jumper at the 13:33 mark to make it 46-34.
However a 4 point play by Freshmen Beth Deren would prove to be the turning part. The Lady Pioneers would outscore UDC 26-9 over the last 13:20 of the ball game.
Glenville still struggled from the field at times, but was able to hit their best percentage so far this season at 39.8%. GSC hit 8 of 23 3 pt attempts.
UDC shot just 30.9% and just 1 of 14 from behind the arc.
The Firebirds held a +10 turnover margin (23-13) over Glenville however the smaller Pioneers were able to grab a +5 rebound advantage (45-40).
The Lady Pioneers hit the road for their next contests as they head to Ohio next weekend. On Sunday GSC will take on the Urbana Knights in Urbana, Ohio. On Monday they will travel to Painesville, Ohio to take on Lake Erie College.
