The Lady Pioneers went on the road and picked up their first victory of the season as they downed the Lady Mountain Lions of Concord University, 61-60, this evening. Senior G Christine DiSabato led the way with 17 points, including clutch free throws late to seal the win.
Senior G Mallory Menendez, who struggled to find her shot added 13 points, and Sophomore Sarah and Suzi Harvey each added 10 points, as GSC (1-2, 1-0) were without starters Kristen Golden and Donita Adams due to injury.
GSC overcame an unreal performance from Lady Lions Center Amber Showalter. The Virginia Senior netted a game high 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting and hauled down 18 rebounds, before fouling out late. Cassidy Smith and Sierra Brown each added 10 points apiece.
The Pioneers struggled from the field again tonight, connecting at just 35.4% from the field and 7 of 23 from behind the arc for 30.4%. Concord (1-4, 1-1) shot 48.9% from the field and 3 of 7 from the 3pt line for 42.9%.
Glenville turned the ball over just eight times, compared to 18 for the Mountain Lions. In addition to the huge positive turnover margin, the Pioneers were able to grab 17 offensive boards compared to just seven for CU. These two margins allowed Glenville to attempt 18 more shots than then counterparts.
Glenville returns to action Wednesday night as they travel to Institute, WV to take on WV State. Tipoff is at 6 P.M.
