The #7Seed Glenville State Pioneers fell to the #3 Seed Fairmont State 69-62 in the WVIAC Women’s Tournament Semifinals this afternoon from the Civic Center in Charleston. Jamie Merinar paced four Falcons in double figures with 18 points as she connected on 6 of 9, including all four of her three point attempts. FSU got 16 from Danielle Cornish, 14 from Gabby Gattuso and 10 from Ashley Vavrek.

Glenville State was led by a game high 25 points from Donita Adams as she would hit on 10 of 19 from the field including five of eight 3pt attempts. Adams added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.   Karina Kendrick would add nine points and 16 rebounds and Mallory Menendez would come off the bench to contribute 10 points.
The Lady Pioneers struggled through a rough first half in which they were plagued by poor shooting. Glenville State shot just 35.5 percent and went into the locker room down four at 33-29.
Fairmont State was led in the half by Jamie Merinar’s 13 points, as she would connect on all four of her 1st half attempts. The Falcons shot a blistering 55.0 percent from the floor and drained all four 3pt field goals.
GSC was paced by Adams’ 15 points including the first nine points of the game for the Pioneers.
The Fighting Falcons would continue their hot shooting as they would come out of the break on an 11-4 run to push the lead to 11 at 42-31, just five minutes in. Merinar would spark the spurt with a triple and a layup to get things going.
Glenville State would slowly begin to work the lead down, as after a Harvey tip in, the FSU lead would be down to one at 47-46 with 6:51 left in the contest.
Fairmont State then would get a pair of free throws from both Samantha Wanichko and Molly Kiger. GSC would keep pace as Adams would drain a jumper and then a Miranda Reed three would knot the game up at 51 all.
Menendez would drain a jumper to give the Pioneers their only lead of the contest at 53-51, with 4:58 remaining.
The GSC lead would be short lived as the Falcons would outscore the Pioneers 8-1 over the next two minutes to grab the lead for good at 59-54.
Adams would knock down a triple to pull Glenville to within two at 59-57 with 1:49 left.
FSU would push the lead to four on a pair of free throws by Gattuso, but Glenville would quickly answer back on as a Menendez three would cut the Fairmont lead back to one.
After a Falcons timeout, Gattuso would have the answer again as she would get free on the left block and convert the layup to make it 63-60 Fairmont, with 54 seconds to go.
All-WVIAC performer and lone senior Karina Kendrick would knock down a jumper with 28 seconds remaining to pull GSC to within one again.
Ashley Vavrek would connect on two clutch free throws to push the margin to three again with 27 seconds to go.
The Lady Pioneers would get two great looks, but an Adams jumper and a Menendez three would both be off the mark.
Vavrek would pull down the rebound on the Menendez miss and then calmly hit two more free throws to put the game out of reach.
