WBB WVIACTourney: #7 Lady Pioneers Upset #2 West Liberty State, 56-47

The #7 Seed Glenville State Lady Pioneers pulled the second upset of the day as they knocked off the #2 Seed Lady Hilltoppers of West Liberty State, 56-47, in the WVIAC Women’s Tournament Quarterfinals at the Civic Center in Charleston.   Donita Adam’s scored a game high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. Karina Kendrick recorded her 18th double – double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes of action.   
The Hilltoppers were paced by Lisa Perry’s 12 points and eight assists, while committing just one turnover. Lauren Russell recorded a double – double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
West Liberty State would take a two point lead, 26 to 24, into the locker room at the break, after a half in which there were six ties and five lead changes.   The Lady Hilltoppers would hold the largest lead of the half at five points.
Lisa Perry would lead WLSC nine points and three assists in the half. Lauren Russell would chip in six points and five boards as West Liberty would shot 34.6 percent from the field and just 3 of 10 from the arc.
The Lady Pioneers were paced by eight points from Adam’s and seven points from Christine DiSabato in the opening the frame. GSC also struggled from the field hitting just 34.4 percent and 1 of 5 from the three point line.  
Both teams did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball as West Lib had only five turnovers and three for GSC.
It wouldn’t take long in the 2nd half for the Lady Pioneers to gain control. After the teams would trade a free throw, the Pioneers would follow a Russell tip in with a Kristen Golden jumper and a three point play by Adams to grab the lead at 30-29.
Russell would answer with a jumper and then WLSC’s Julie Cessna would answer Mallory Menendez’s three, with a three of her own to put the Hilltoppers back on top 34-33 with 12:50 to go.
The Lady Pioneers then went on a 6-0 spurt over the next three minutes to grab a five point lead at 41-36 with 9:47 left.
Renee Farina and Lisa Perry would then hit back to back threes to give West Liberty the lead at 42-41 at the 6:45 mark in the 2nd half.
GSC’s Sarah Harvey would hit a free throw to tie it at 42 all, then Farina would follow an Adams jumper to tie the game for the ninth time at 44 all.
Glenville State would grab the lead for good as Menendez would drain a triple from the left wing to making it 47-44 with 2:44 to go.
The Lady Pioneers would hit 8 of 10 free throws over the final two minutes to ice the ball game.
The Lady Pioneers defense held West Liberty to just 29.8 percent from the field and just 7 of 21 from behind the arc.
GSC held a 42-38 rebounding advantage and committed a season low eight turnovers.
The Lady Pioneers move on the WVIAC Semifinals to take on the winner of Fairmont State and West Virginia State on Friday. Tip Off at the Civic Center is at 1 pm.
