The Lady Pioneers jumped all over the visiting Tigers of Salem International and never looked back in their 67-47 victory in the opening round of the WVIAC Tournament from Lilly Gymnasium. Donita Adams paced Glenville State with 23 points on 8 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 7 from behind the arc. Karina Kendrick chipped in her 17th double – double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
WVIAC Tourney: Lady Pioneers Run Past Salem International, 67-47
Jeannie Saunders led SIU with nine points, six rebounds and six assists. Tigers finished the season with a 9 – 19 record.
The GSC defense hounded Salem Int’l all evening, forcing 21 Tiger miscues and holding them to just 35.6 percent from the field, including a miserable 2-11 from behind the three point line. The taller Pioneers held a plus 14 rebounding advantage, 38-24, leading to 24 points in the paint.
The two teams would trade baskets in the opening minute before Glenville State would go on a 14-2 spurt, fueled by eight Adams’ points, to grab a 16-4 advantage at the 14:17 mark.
The teams would again trade baskets before SIU would score four straight points to cut the lead to eight.
GSC would then go on its second big run of the 1st half as they would outscore Salem 22-6 over the next eight minutes to grab a 40-16 lead with 4:26 to go in the half.
SIU would answer with eight straight to end the half, as Glenville would hold a 40-24 advantage at the break.
The Lady Pioneers would open the 2nd half by making six of their first nine shots from the field, while outscoring SIU 14-3 to go up by 27, 54-27 with 14:17 to go in the game.
Salem would never mount a challenge as the GSC lead would swell to as many as 29 before coming to rest on the final score.
Adams would add three assists, three steals and two rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
Kristen Golden added 10 points and three rebounds.
The Lady Pioneers shot 45.5 percent from the field and 31.6 percent for three for the game.
The #7 Seed Pioneers move on to the WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals to take on #2 Seed West Liberty State, Wednesday at 6:30 P.M. at the Civic Center in Charleston, WV. GSC fell to West Liberty in their only meeting this season 53-47 in West Liberty.
