Lady Pioneers Rally to Defeat UC

The Lady Pioneers overcame a 16point 1st half deficit to power past the University of Charleston Lady Eagles tonight in WVIAC action. Glenville State got double-doubles from Kristen Golden and Karina Kendrick. Golden posted a game and career high 27 points and 11 rebounds and Kendrick added 17 points and game high 17 boards as they Lady Pioneers picked up a crucial road victory and improved to 13-10 Overall and 11-5 WVIAC play.

UC, who was paced by 14 points from Emily Jones and 12 points from both Kaitlyn Arick and Veronica Carman, fell to 14-10 Overall and 11-6 in WVIAC play. 
The Lady Eagles would come out hot as they would stroke 8 of their first 11 attempts from the field and quickly jump out to a 13-3 lead just 3:30 into the contest. The UC lead would swell to 16 at 25-9 with 12:11 to go in the half. 
Glenville State would get things in gear as they would outscore UC 24-13 over the final 12 minutes of the half. Kendrick’s would score nine to fuel the run, and Mallory Menendez would contribute five points as they Pioneers would go into the locker room trailing 38-33. 
Charleston would maintain its lead to start the 2nd half and would push it to the largest margin of the half at 49-41 with 15:37 remaining. GSC would quickly get things going as they would go on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to tie it up at 51 all. 
UC would have an answer every time the Lady Pioneers would push ahead. The latest coming on a Jihan Williams layup, to tie the ball game up at 61-61 with 5:11 remaining, the closest the Eagles would get the rest of the night. 
The Pioneers would quickly work to put things away. Donita Adam’s would follow her own miss to tip it in and put GSC up 2. A missed jumper by UC’s Jennifer Demeyer was quickly followed by a Menendez triple and a timeout by UC’s coach Sheri Wynn.   The triple by Menendez would make it 66-61 with 4:08 to go, and it would also be the last field goal made by the Lady Pioneers.
The Golden Eagles would go cold as they miss their next eight shots and Glenville State would clinch it from the foul line.
The Pioneers would attempt 16 free throws in the final three minutes, making 14, to seal the contest. 
For the game the Pioneers shot 42.4 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
Reigning WVIAC player of the week Donita Adams overcame a poor shooting performance to make all 12 free throw attempts and score 19 points. She also added seven rebounds and four assists. 
Menendez, who couldn’t seem to find her stroke from outside, chipped in 12 points. 
Miranda Reed continued her strong play off the bench as she contributed seven points, four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
The Lady Pioneers return to action as they play host Thursday to 2nd place Concord.   Tip Off is 5:30 pm.
