The Lady Pioneers couldn’t hold on to their half time lead as they fell to the Lady Hilltoppers of West Liberty State, 53-47 in WVIAC WBB action. The Hilltoppers (11-4, 5-3) were paced by Renee Farina’s 11 points as she went over the 1,000 point mark for her career. Lisa Perry added 11 assists and Lauren Russell chipped in 7 points and 10 rebounds.
Glenville was led by a game high 12 points from both Donita Adams and Karina Kendrick. The pair each had 9 rebounds, as Kendrick was just one rebound short from her league leading 9th double-double.
Mallory Menendez added 10 points for the Lady Pioneers as again they struggled from the field shooting just 37% and a woeful 3-15 (20%) from the 3pt line.
The opening half would find the Pioneers trailing 5-2 before going on a 25-8 spurt over the next 13 minutes to put them up 27-15. However, just like the losses in December Glenville State was unable to finish the half strongly as West Liberty State would quickly go on a 10-0 run over the last 3:03. Glenville once up 12 would have to settle for a two point halftime lead, at 25-23.
After an Adams’ jumper put the Pioneers up four to start the 2nd half, WLSC would go on an 11-2 run over the next six minutes as a Russell free throw would give them a five point lead at 34-29.
The Lady Pioneers would quickly answer as they would hold the Hilltoppers to without a field goal over the next five minutes, while getting a jumper from Kim Stephens and a 3 pointers from Menendez. The 5-0 spurt would pull GSC even with WLSC at 34 with 10:19 to go.
West Liberty State would then force the Pioneers into turnovers on three of their next four possessions as they went on a 12-4 run to put them up 46-38 with three minutes to go, and essentially put the game out of reach.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they take on Wheeling Jesuit. Tip Off is at 6pm
