The Lady Pioneers couldn’t shake off a cold shooting first half and sloppy ball handling as they fell to the WV Wesleyan Lady Bobcats tonight, 79-69 in WVIAC WBB action from Buckhannon. WVWC was led by a game high 31 points from WVIAC leading scorer Sarah Van Horn. Van Horn also added 7 rebounds and 7 steals. Angela Tassari recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Bobcats improved to 6-5 and 4-1 in WVIAC play, while the Lady Pioneers fell to 4-8 and 2-3.
Glenville State was paced by 19 points from sharpshooting Junior Mallory Menendez as she connected on 5 of 9 3pt attempts. Senior Karina Kendrick recorded her WVIAC best 7th double-double as she had 15 points and 13 rebounds, as well as five steals and four assists. Christine DiSabato added 15 points on 5 of 10 3pt attempts.
The Bobcats would use two big runs to pull away to a 15 point half time lead. The first run, saw the game tied 10-10 at the 13:49 mark, Van Horn and Tassari would then engineer a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to push the lead to 20-10 with 9:45 remaining. The second came after the Pioneers had cut the lead to 8 at 28-20, with just over four minutes remaining in the half. WVWC would close the half on a 11-4 run, as it was 39-24 at the half.
The 2nd half would see the Pioneers warm up from the field and make a couple solid runs to give WVWC a scare. GSC would go on a 18-10 run over the opening five minutes to make it 49-42. The Bobcats would answer back as they went on 12-4 run over the next seven minutes. The lead would hover around the 12 point mark before back to back pairs of Kendrick free throws would cut the lead to four with 1:43 to go. However the Bobcats would connect on 8 of 10 free throws in the final 1:20 to put the contest away.
For the game the Pioneers would shot 36% from the field and an impressive 10 of 23 from the 3pt line.
Once again GSC struggled to protect the ball as the turned it over 22 times compared to WVWC’s 17.
The Lady Pioneers battled foul trouble all night as they had three players foul out and saw WV Wesleyan shoot 39 free throws to their 20.
Glenville State Lady Pioneers return to action this Thursday, as they take on WV State for the third and final time this season. Tip off in Institute, WV is at 5:30 pm.
