DAY 2 Recap:
Amanda Shannon (North Andover, MA) drilled a three-pointer to break a 56-56 tie with 52 seconds remaining to propel the Merrimack women’s basketball team to the 61-56 victory over Goldey Beacom in the final game of the Valley Cup Classic at the Volpe Gym Saturday afternoon.
Shannon’s three followed six straight points by the Lightning, including a jumper from Nicole Turoni to tie the game with 1:19 to play.
Following the three-pointer, Casey Miller (Fairbanks, AK) drew an offensive foul on Jacinda Jones, and Shannon sank two free throws to seal the second straight victory for the Warriors.
Merrimack overcame a 23% field-goal percentage in the first half to shoot 58% in the second frame.
They got outstanding paint play from senior Gately Golden (Fair Haven, NJ) who posted a double-double on ten points and a career high 14 rebounds, including nine in the first half. Shannon finished with 15, tying Takeya Faison (Lynn, MA) for the team lead. Ashley Brownlee (Portland, ME) added 12 points and seven boards in 36 minutes.
Kellyn Nolan tallied a game-high 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting for Goldey Beacom, who fell to 3-6 with the loss.
In earlier action, Revital Carmon tallied 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists leading UMass Lowell to an 85-72 victory over Glenville State. The River Hawks (6-5) posted 44 points in the paint, including 13 from Antonnea Robinson. Guards Rahshala Valentine (12 points) and Megan Berry (16 points) also scored in double figures, as UML shot 51% from the field and committed only seven turnovers.
Donita Adams led all scorers with 24 points for the Pioneers (3-6), while Karina Kendrick recorded a double-double on 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Warriors are 5-3 lifetime in the four-year history of the Valley Cup, while the River Hawks are 6-2.
DAY 1 Recap:
Amanda Shannon’s (North Andover, MA) lay-up with 16 seconds to play give the Merrimack women’s basketball team the 50-47 victory over Glenville State in game two of the Valley Cup Classic Friday night at the Volpe Gym.
With the win, the Warriors snap an eight-game Northeast-10 losing streak. They are unbeaten in three games against non-conference opponents.
Merrimack scored the final five points of the game over the last 3:20 and took the lead behind Shannon’s drive and lay-in. The Pioneers then threw the ball out of bounds with six seconds left and called a timeout they did not have on the next possession, giving Shannon two free throws via the technical foul. Miranda Reed’s three-pointer from mid court was well short giving the Warriors the victory.
Shannon led all scorers with 19 points, while Ashley Brownlee (Portland, ME) and Casey Miller (Fairbanks, AK) added ten each.
Donita Adams posted a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds) while Karina Kendrick added eight points and eight boards in 20 minutes, while battling foul trouble all night.
In earlier action, UMass Lowell scored the first nine points in both halves in a 64-37 victory over Goldey-Beacom. Megan Berry led the way with 14 points, while Rahshala Valentine added nine assists for the Riverhawks (5-5). Toni Jones posted a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) for the Lightning (3-5).
Merrimack (3-8, 0-6 NE-10) will take on Goldey-Beacom at 4 p.m. Saturday in the finale of the Valley Cup, while UML and Glenville State will battle in the first game of the final day at 2 p.m.
