The 16th Ranked Glenville State Lady Pioneers defeated the WV State University Yellow Jackets, 73-59, in their WVIAC opener tonight at Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium. Senior Karina Kendrick recorded her 2nd double-double this season with 26 points and 16 rebounds as she led Glenville State (3-0, 1-0) to their 2nd victory over the Yellow Jackets this season. Junior G Mallory Menendez added 19 points on 5 of 8 shooting from behind the arc and Sophomore Donita Adams chipped in 13 points and seven boards.
With the game tied 29 all with 2:10 remaining in the first half, back to back Kendrick put backs and a Menendez layup would give the Lady Pioneers the lead for good, 35-29 at the half.
GSC opened the 2nd half outscoring WV State (0-3, 1-0) 16-10 in the first six minutes, to push the lead to 12, 51-39. WVSU would get no closer than six the rest of the contest.
The Yellow Jackets, who shot just 33% from the field, were paced by Brittany Mingo’s 25 points and seven rebounds and Randy Cary’s 10 points.
The Lady Pioneers shot 40% from the field and 47% from the 3 point line, and harassed WV State into 23 turnovers, while committing a seasons’ best 17.
The Glenville State Women return to action next Tuesday, December 4th as they will travel to Athens, WV to take on the Concord University Lady Mountain Lions.
