GSC Receives Top 10% Rating in National Survey

Glenville, WV—The 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results are in, and Glenville State College was highly ranked in several categories.

Glenville State seniors rated the college in the top 10% of the 751 participating institutions for providing a ‘Supportive Campus Environment.’ Glenville seniors rated the college highly in terms of the support they received at Glenville State in the areas of academic success, non-academic responsibilities, social activities, and the quality of relationships with other students, faculty, and staff.

Both first-year students and seniors rated Glenville State in the top 50% in student-faculty interaction. This reflects how students feel about their interaction with their professors in and out of the classroom including academic pursuits, career plans, and student life issues.

In the ‘Enriching Educational Experience’ category, Glenville students ranked the college above peer institutions for providing complementary learning experiences, diversity experiences, use of technology to enhance collaboration between peers and instructors, and opportunities for curricular activities and community service.

Glenville State College also was rated above peer institutions in the category of ‘Active and Collaborative Learning’. The results show that Glenville students learn with others to address academic and social issues that they may encounter in and out of the classroom and during and after their college experience.
In other NSSE results, 79% of first-year students felt that Glenville State College placed substantial emphasis on academics, 87% of first-year students reported a favorable image of Glenville State, 89% of seniors said they would choose Glenville State College again if they could start their college career over.

Overall, Glenville State received high marks across the board from first year and senior students when asked about the nature and quality of their experiences at GSC.

“NSSE confirms what Glenville students have long known that the faculty and staff of Glenville State are committed to the success of GSC students and are willing to give freely of their time and talent in accordance with the college’s motto of ‘Where You Belong’,” said Glenville State College Provost Dr. John M. Peek.

NSSE is conducted by Indiana University. The student survey annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. The results also reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college and point to areas where colleges and universities are performing well and aspects of the undergraduate experience that could be improved.
