Glenville, WV – The Glenville State Pioneer football team overcame soggy conditions at I.L. Morris stadium on Saturday afternoon and claimed a 41-14 victory at the hands of West Liberty State College. With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-0 in the WVIAC.
GSC got on the board early in the first quarter when Darrien Hudson picked up a blocked punt and ran it into the end-zone for a 7-0 lead.
GSC then broke the game open in the second quarter as quarterback Darold Hughes hit wide-out Jakari Murphy on a slant across the middle. Murphy made several defenders miss and scooted 85 yards to pay dirt. Kareem Alexander had a 1 yard run later in the second to put GSC up 21-0 going in to halftime.
Murphy continued his output in the third quarter scoring on a 46 yard pass play again from Hughes.
The Hilltoppers got on the board as B. Schroeder hauled in a 61 yard pass from quarterback L.D. Crow to make the score 21-7.
Kicker Colston Bayless nailed field goals of 20 and 37 yards in the third quarter for GSC to stretch the lead to 34-7 by the end of the third. Derek McRae scored on a 2 yard run early in the fourth quarter for the Pioneers, and Schroeder scored on a 13 yard pass play for the Hilltoppers with 1:15 left in the fourth to make the final score 41-14.
Darold Hughes threw for 298 yard and 2 touchdowns for the Pioneers as he completed 15 of 24 attempts and 1 interceptions. Joe Mesadieu rushed for 44 yards on 18 attempts. Murphy caught 2 passes, both for touchdowns, for 131 yards. Alexander also rushed for 28 yards on 7 attempts and scored a touchdown. Jordan Griffin hauled in a game high 7 catches for 73 yards.
Defensively, James Washington recorded 7 tackles; three for sacks and two and a half for a loss.
For West Liberty, L.D. Crow threw for 173 yards on 11 of 29 attempts and 1 touchdown. Brandon Davis led the rushing attack with 63 yards on 14 attempts. B. Schroeder hauled in 4 catches for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns. Marco Ricchetti recorded 6 and a half tackles.
The Pioneers stay at home next week as the Concord Mountain Lions come calling. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
