Glenville, WV – The Glenville State College Pioneers football team prevailed over the Concord University Mountain Lions 14-3, to stay undefeated in conference play.
The mountain lions got on the board first when John Scritchfield hit a 19 yard field goal at 3:18 to go in the first quarter to take a 3-0. The Pioneers came back and drove all the way to the Concord thirty-six yard line, but Steffen Colon threw an interception to Riyahd Richardson as the Pioneers defense retook the field.
The Mountain Lions then drove to the Pioneers ten-yard but missed a 27 yard field goal. The Pioneers ended up punting the ball back to the Mountain Lions.
The Mountain Lions then had to punt the ball back to GSC, but Ronnie Mills blocked a Brad Cox punt and Josh Jenkins picked the punt up and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown as the Pioneers took a 7-3 lead into the half.
The teams battled back and fourth throughout the third quarter, and eventually the Pioneers took a 14-3 led at 1:36 in the fourth quarter on a four yard touchdown run by Joe Mesadieu.
The Mountain Lions had a chance to score late, but the Pioneers defense held on and forced a four and out as the Pioneers claimed a 14-3 win.
Kareem Alexander led the rushing attack for the Pioneers as he toted the ball 15 times for 64 yards. Joe Mesadieu also rushed for 60 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown run.
Darold Hughes went 1 for 1 for 17 yards but left the game with 12:02 left in the first quarter with an injury. Steffen Colon went 13 for 21 for 140, with two interceptions.
Jordan Griffin led the Pioneers in receiving with four catches for 43 yards, while Antwan Stewart hauled in four receptions for 40 yards. Jakharie Murphy also grabbed three receptions with 39 yards.
James Washington led the defense with six tackles with one sack and two tackles for loss. Shawn Stackhouse had a good game with 5.5 tackles.
Concord was led by Chris Rodriguez on the ground with 69 yards on 16 carries. Zack Grossi led the passing attack with 196 yards going 16 for 39 with an interception.
Rashid Baker hauled in six receptions for 64 yards. The Mountain Lions defense was led by Joe Greenway with 8.5 tackles.
The Pioneers return to action next week when they travel to West Virginia State Saturday, October 15th. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
