Pioneers Fall on the Road to the University of Charleston 36-46

Terry Reese led the Pioneers defense with eight total tackles on the day

Charleston, WV – After an explosive start for the Glenville State Pioneers the University of Charleston Golden Eagles erased a 13-0 deficit as they pulled off a 46-36 upset over the Pioneers.

The Pioneers started the game off with a 96 yard kickoff return by Jakharie Murphy but the after point attempt was blocked as GSC took a quick 6-0 lead.

On the Golden Eagles first possession a fumble by Jordan Roberts was recorded by GSC’s Kyle Warner as the Pioneers took over first and ten.

The Pioneers then drove 54 yards on ten plays as Derek McRae scored on a seven yard run with 9:33 left in the first quarter putting the Pioneers ahead 13-0.

The University of Charleston finally got on the score board when Jordan Roberts scored on a five yard run as the Golden Eagles cut the lead 13-7.

Charleston then took the lead at the 7:38 mark in the second quarter when Maurice Leak scored on a one yard quarterback sneak as they took a 14-13 lead.

The Pioneers then drove 65 yards as Colston Bayless hit a 23 yard field goal putting GSC back on top 16-14 with 1:27 left in the first half.

But the Pioneers left to much time for the Golden Eagles as they drove 57 yards in five plays as they scored on a touchdown pass from Leak as he hit Taylor Franz for a four yard touchdown as UC took a 21-16 lead into the half.

The Golden Eagles then scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Darrell Byrd hauled in a 56 yard touchdown pass from Leak as they took a 29-16 lead.

Both teams battled back and fourth, the Pioneers scored with only 31 seconds left in the third when Darold Hughes connected with Jordan Griffin as he caught a ten yard touchdown making it 23-29.

The Pioneers defense could not stop the UC Golden Eagles offense as Puma Nuredini hit a 44 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter making it 32-23.

On the Pioneers next possession the GSC offense was driving until Andrew Flohr picked off Hughes and took it 64 yards to pay dirt as UC took a 39-23 lead.

The Pioneers scored again as Griffin hauled in his second touchdown pass of the day from three yards out making it 29-39 with 4:44 left to play in the game.

After a failed onside kick attempt by the Pioneers the Golden Eagles drove 44 yards as Roberts scored his second run of the day this one coming from 17 yards out putting UC up 46-29.

The Pioneers though would not give up as Hughes found Antwan Stewart on a 14 yard touchdown pass as they made it 36-46.

After another failed onside attempt by the Pioneers the UC Golden Eagles then ran the clock out as they held on to the 46-36 victory.

Joe Measdieu led the ground attack as he toted the ball 23 times for 168 yards while Derek McRae rushed for 22 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.

Darold Hughes went 30 for 53 for 327 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

His favorite target being Antwan Stewart as he hauled in ten balls for 122 yards a touchdown while Jordan Griffin caught nine passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Jakharie Murphy also played well as he caught eight passes for 112 yards.

Terry Reese led the Pioneers defense with eight tackles while Matt Parker recorded seven tackles on the day.

Jordan Roberts led the UC rushing attack with 141 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.

Maruice Leak went 5 of 9 through the air for 98 yards and two touchdown passes. Leak also rushed the ball nine times for 87 yards and a touchdown run.

Darrell Byrd caught one pass for 56 yards and a touchdown while Taylor Franz caught one pass for four yards and a touchdown.

Aaron Dunlap led the defense with 12 tackles and a sack on the day.

The Pioneers return home next week as Shepherd travels to Glenville on Senior Day. Game time is set for 12:00PM.
