Celebrating WV Veterans

Celebrating WV Veterans

“The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who have fought here have thus far so nobly advanced…” Abraham Lincoln – from the Gettysburg Address, 1863. As a great nation, America has honored, respected and helped to provide certain benefits for its veterans, realizing that had it not been for their sacrifices the nation itself [...]

International Week Events

International Week Events

Activities For International Week             As we celebrate international week, take a look at some of these activities taking place.  On Sunday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be events representing the sporting activities from various nations.  On the lawn at Clark Hall, soccer, and bocce ball (an ancient game whose modern adaptation resembles bowling), will be occurring.  Also during this same time, fencing and MMA (mixed martial arts) will be taking place in the MCCC Ballroom on the third floor of [...]

GSC’s High Adventure

GSC’s High Adventure

GSC’s High Adventure Program             The High Adventure program offered at Glenville State College is designed to allow students at the college to take in the beauty of West Virginia from a mountain top while hiking, from the door of a plane before skydiving, or while plunging down forested slopes riding a zip line. The mission of the High Adventure program is to “provide GSC students with quality outdoor experiences that ultimately promote personal enrichment and community enhancement.  Through well-organized outdoor experiences, participants will have [...]

An International Community

An International Community

An International Community             America is a melting pot from many nations.  Almost every country from all corners of the world have contributed to the great cultural diversity this nation enjoys.  Without this diverse collection of customs, languages, and religions, America would not be as culturally rich as we are.  There are and have been students attending GSC from a variety of countries, including Somalia, Serbia, Ireland, and Japan to list a few. This week at GSC, we are celebrating International Week in recognition of [...]

The College Vote

The College Vote

The Necessity of the College Vote   With the tendency of both national parties to practice partisan politics, with each side demonizing the other, it is of no wonder people hesitate to vote. In a country where it seems as though all political decisions are bought and sold to the highest bidder, and big money interests are in charge of the national agenda, it is understandable that people feel jaded when it’s election time. This is true for the average American, and is especially true for college students. [...]

Town and Gown in Glenville

Town and Gown in Glenville

“Town and Gown” in Glenville The relationship between the town (Glenville), and gown (GSC) has been a difficult journey since the inception of the college.  For years the two institutions lived in virtual isolation from each other.  The college and students remained detached from the community around them, and the town of Glenville did little to encourage interaction between students and local businesses. Today, both academic and local government leaders have been implementing a more cooperative approach.  College administrators were finding that the surrounding town [...]

Campus Rape: An Epidemic?

Campus Rape: An Epidemic?

Campus Rape: An Epidemic?             On September 17, 2012, a 20 year old former student of Glenville State College took the college’s board of governors, its chief of public safety, and four students to court after she was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted on campus. The student, who attended GSC from August 2009 to October 2010, filed the federal suit alleging the college and its department of public safety “showed minimal police and investigative training” because, she asserts, evidence was “destroyed, lost, misappropriated, or contaminated.” [...]

GSC’s West Virginia Legacy Project

GSC’s West Virginia Legacy Project

GSC’s West Virginia Legacy Project             As a nation, Americans have had few years of relative peace, with many families parting with loved ones to serve for the country.  West Virginia is not any different than other places in the nation where soldiers leave home to face the realities of war.  In fact, West Virginia sends more soldiers per capita to the military than any other state.  Now, thanks in part to help from Glenville State College, the West Virginia Legacy Project will present its [...]

Exploring the Mountain State

Exploring the Mountain State

Exploring the Mountain State With the return of a chill to the evenings, and the leaves preparing to fall, I am reminded again of the natural beauty of West Virginia.  From the mountain tops to the valley bottoms, this state offers some of the most beautiful scenery in America with Glenville sitting in the heart of it all. For those unfamiliar with the local changes of the seasons, fall, then winter will soon be upon us.  With the drop in temperature compared with previous weeks, [...]
