The Glenville State College Pioneers defeated West Virginia State 29-12 this past Saturday in another conference battle. The Pioneers now sit as the second seed in the WVIAC standings behind Shepherd with a record of 3-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
On the third possession of the game, Rahmann Lee ran the ball 34 yards in the end zone for a touchdown. Unfortunately, West Virginia State blocked Colston Bayless’ point-after kick. The Pioneers took the lead 6-0. At the 2:04 mark in the second quarter, Rahmann Lee once again found himself in the end zone after running the ball from five yards out, making the score 12-0 after the Pioneers point after kick was blocked again.
On the second play of the third quarter, the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets would score; Glenville State, however, blocked their point-after kick, holding the score at 12-6. The Pioneers soon answered with a scoring play on their next possession. Glenville State drove the ball on seven plays for 46 yards. Rahmann Lee scored his third touchdown of the game from one yard out, extending the lead for the Pioneers 19-6.
The Pioneers strong defense forced the Yellow Jackets to three and out on their next possession. Glenville State then drove the ball on ten plays for 37 yards when Colston Bayless scored by kicking a 32 yard field goal for the Pioneers making the score 22-6.
Quin Thornton took a handoff and ran 84 yards to the end zone at the start of the fourth quarter, as the Pioneers took a 29-6 lead. By the time the Yellow Jackets found the end zone one last time to make the score 29-12 it was too late. The Pioneers marked down their win with a final score of 29-12.
The Pioneers rushed the ball for 275 yards while the Yellow Jackets were held to 83 rushing yards by the Glenville State defense. However, penalties haunted the Pioneers as they had 11 for 167 yards.
Quin Thornton led the Pioneers on the ground, rushing for 101 yards on only five carries and a touchdown. Rahmann Lee was not far behind, carrying the ball 15 times for 92 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Justin Feagin, who replaced Darold Hughes at quarterback due to a concussion, completed seven of 18 passes for 159 yards while rushing for 60 yards. Rahmann Lee led Glenville State on receiving with three catches for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Orlandus Harris also caught three passes for 43 yards.
Devin Cain led the Pioneers defense for the second week in a row racking up 8.5 tackles, while Nate Ingersoll had 3.5 tackles along with an interception.
Glenville State will see their next conference game on Saturday, October 20 at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon; kick off is set for 1:00p.m.
