After dismantling the top ranked team in the state of Pennsylvania, the Lady Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season against a weaker Pennsylvania foe. The Lady Pioneers hit the road to California University of Pennsylvania to take on the Lady Vulcans. Early on the Lady Pioneers had the lead but not even midway through the first half the women lost the lead for good. Glenville had by far their worst shooting performance of the season as they only shot an abysmal 19 % from the floor. The defense didn’t do much better as the Pioneers allowed the mighty Lady Vulcans to shoot 51% from the field on the night. No Lady Pioneer performed up to her usual standard but Kenyona Simmons almost had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Pioneers didn’t let the 102-55 drubbing keep them down though. A key conference match-up against the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit went in favor of the Lady Pioneers on their home court. The first half was an up-and-down the court affair with both teams trading baskets. Towards the end of the half the Lady Pioneers went on a nine point flurry of scoring to go ahead by 11 into the second half. The second half was all Lady Pioneers as they built their lead up over 20 points as they took a 27 point victory in their conference opener.
Ginny Mills led the Lady Pioneers with 22 points. Also in double figures for Glenville were Kenyona Simmons, Ashleigh Fossett, and Tiffany Huffman. Guard Jenlena Elez led all players with eight assists.
The Lady Pioneers face another conference foe today at Bluefield State. Scheduled tip-off is 5:30 in a double header match-up that features the men’s team as well.
