The Pioneers defeated the Shepherd University Rams on Tuesday night in the first round of tournament play. In the first half, the teams exchanged baskets until the buzzer sounded for halftime with Glenville State up by three, 41-38.
At the start of the second half, they continued to battle it out bucket for bucket until five minutes in when the Shepherd Rams were able to tie the score at 49 all. However, that didn’t seem to startle the Pioneers as they quickly regained their lead by four, 58-54, with 13 minutes left in the game. The Pioneers continued to build their lead as they ahead by 11, 70-59.
It wasn’t long until the Rams finally got tired of trailing when they cut the Pioneers’ lead to two, but were forced to foul Glenville in order to regain possession of the ball. Joe Ballard only made one of his free-throws, but the Pioneers managed to get the rebound when Lamar Mallory scored a lay-up. This sealed the win for Glenville, 88-83.
Jamel Morris led the Pioneers in scoring with 22 points, while Kevin Gray chipped in with 13 points. Mallory scored yet another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds on the night. DJ Blanks scored 11 points in the victory, and was followed closely by JJ Vasquez who had 10 points.
After notching this win, the Pioneers will be Charleston bound today as they head to the civic center to take on the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers in the quarter-final game in the WVIAC tournament.
