Big Games For Football and VolleyballBy Jacob Clevenger | September 5th, 2013 | Category: Lead Story, Sports | No Comments »
The time is finally here. This weekend marks the start of the 2013-14 football season for the Glenville State College Pioneers. While this first game of the season has been greatly anticipated by the players and coaches, the Pioneers will be facing quite the task. This Saturday they will make the 4 hour trek to Lexington, Virginia to face the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute.
The Keydets of the Big South Conference participate at the Football Championship Subdivision of Division One football. By competing in this game the Pioneers will be taking a major step up from their normal Division Two opponents. However, the Pioneers do not face an impossible task.
Last week the Keydets found themselves in an uncomfortable position as they took a 34-0 thumping from Richmond, a fellow FCS school. During the contest, the Keydets were held to only 174 yard of total offense while allowing over 500 yards to their opponents. This massive difference in yardage could very well be a sign of good things to come for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will look to build on their success they had on the ground last season. If they are able to establish this running game then they should have no trouble passing the ball on a team that surrendered over 300 yards through the air a week ago.
Also this week the Lady Pioneer Volleyball team will begin their season taking the court versus Charleston, Bluefield, and Slippery Rock. This Invitational action will begin on Friday and games will continue throughout Saturday as well. This is an excellent opportunity to come out and support the Lady Pioneers of Glenville State College as they get the 2013 season started.
