Billy Burke, a Gilmer County native and Glenville State graduate, had a book signing last Wednesday at the Robert F. Kidd Library from 12-2 p.m. Burke’s book, Billy B. Burke: A Man of Many Hats, is an autobiography that details his life from the very beginning. Despite overcoming some impressive odds and having such an impressive political career, Burke would not have writtena book at all if it hadn’t been for an injury. “I got hurt and was in a wheelchair and had my leg in a splint for three months and I got started on it then,” Burke said about the beginning processes for his book. In the ensuing five years Burke spent whatever free time he had writing the book by hand rather than by computer. It wasn’t until the book was in its final stages that Burke had the story typed up.
Billy Burke wasn’t the only big name in politics at the library on Wednesday. Accompanying him to the book signing was none other than his wife, Marge Burke. In her own right, she has had an impressive political career as a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates, a representative for West Virginia at the Democratic National Convention, and was a member of the Farm Bureau and Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Burke told me with some pride in his voice “We were chosen as pioneers of the year,” as he pointed to a paragraph in a magazine article open on the table that mentioned the achievement he shared with his wife. Both Billy and Marge Burke took time to speak with all that came to the library on Wednesday and Mr. Burke signed every copy of his book. Snacks and drinks were available to all those that came.
