Thomas Marcellus Marshall. 1851-1925. (Principal 1875-1881)

Thomas Marcellus Marshall (T. M. Marshall) was a former principal of Glenville Normal School. He was widely known as an educator and a world traveler. He was born May 17, 1851, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Marshall of Stouts Mills, WV. He received his early education in Gilmer County, and later graduated from Marshall College.

In September of 1873, shortly after Glenville Normal School opened, T. M. Marshall was appointed First Assistant to the principal Louis Bennett. T. M. Marshall became the principal of the school in 1875 and served until June 1881. Later, he taught for a few years in Indian schools in the West. T. M. Marshall was very prominent in the N.E.A. and was its first life director. In his world travels, he visited nearly every county. He could speak at least six different languages. T. M. Marshall married Olive A. Hays and had seven children. He died November 13, 1925.
