GLENVILLE STATE WRESTLING VISION

Wrestling is a sport that requires you as an athlete to dominate your opponent mentally and physically 100% of the time. Every program/coach is different. Here at GSC we focus on: INTENSITY, CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, BELIEF, DESIRE, PREPARATION, and WINNING. We take a holistic approach when dealing with student athletes. These students will not always be GSC Wrestlers, but they will all be a part of the community wherever they live. We use every opportunity to build future pillars not puddles in the world you and I live in.

The only way a coach or athlete will improve is to set increasingly high goals and then
work hard to achieve them and start the process over again. It is important that our
athletes get the most out of themselves and others.

It is critical not to compromise good values of our program for winning only. Everything
is geared toward the interest of our students, both now and when they leave the program.

Team style:
We wrestle offense first. We are heavy with an attack style the entire time. We want to set the pace of every match. We never want to be on our heals wrestling only defense.  Our goal is to dominate the neutral position. Takedowns humiliate your opponent and eventually through repetition of these moves they will lose emotional control which will ensure victory on the mat. Once your opponent becomes frustrated and discontent he is yours. In practice we focus on: mental dominance, physical-ness, hard work, and drilling/technique.

Training Intensity:
Our intensity is developed through a specific order of training.

  1. MENTAL TOUGHNESS
  2. STRENGTH
  3. CONDITIONING/ENDURANCE
  4. FLEXIBILITY

We try to “Raise the Standard” in every match. Few athletes ever perform at the same level in major competition as they do during the season. Unfortunately, many wrestlers tighten up and hold back. The greatest of champions are able to get the most out of themselves when it counts! Champions perform at their “optimal level of emotional arousal” and do the little things necessary to win the close matches. Below are some simple suggestions in no particular order that we try to instill to help win our big matches when it matters most.

INTENSE DRILLING helps us perform instinctively in the heat of battle. It is critical our wrestlers fight for every point in the practice room. This scrambling instinct helps when it comes match time.

POSITIVE THINKING is one thing often over looked that is beneficial to all athletes.  This is important on weeks and days prior to our major competition.

We strive to VISUALIZE everything we want to do against our opponents every time we are in competition. We believe in seeing our success before it occurs.

PROPER NUTRITION AND REST is vital. It is important to control our weight daily so that we can focus on nothing but performance when we compete.

WARM-UP is one thing we take serious. Preparation before a match more times than not determines the outcome.

CONTROL the tempo from every angle of every match.

We use MOTION AND BODY FAKES to help set match pace. WE DO NOT STAND AROUND EVER.  Motion is important for all our set ups.

WE WRESTLE THROUGH THE END OF EVERY PERIOD. I do not think one second in a match should be wasted resting.

WE STRIVE TO FINISH EVERY PERIOD ON TOP AND DEFINITELY NOT ON BOTTOM.

WE NEVER RELAX ON THE EDGE. It is easy to score when one relaxes on the edge. We try to never have our backs to the line.

STAY FOCUSED. No matter what happens, bad call/mistake/frustration, we are always wrestling to score.

WE BELIEVE IN EACH OTHER. No matter what or who we face we always believe we can win. We have no room for doubt on the team. There is no weak wrestler and no weak weight class on the team.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS! Execution of moves when you are tired is important. We train to go past our physical thresholds on a diurnal basis. Our highest goals will never be obtained if we are mental midgets. The biggest field of battle to conquer is in the mind.
