Glenville State College currently offers a Certificate of Completion in Bluegrass Music. The Certificate aims to preserve traditional bluegrass music by engaging students in culturally-based learning experiences and music-focused events. Students in the Bluegrass Music Certificate program will be amongst a diverse population in our local community and beyond. Students will develop proficient technology, educational, business, oral traditions, history, and performance-based skillsets that will enable them to promote and embrace the heritage and curriculum within the Appalachian Region.
Bluegrass music first appeared at Glenville State in the fall of 2002, a project of then Department Chair John McKinney and legendary musician (and Glenville State alumnus), Buddy Griffin. Students are immersed with legendary bluegrass music from artists such as; Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Reno & Smiley, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Jim & Jesse, and many others.
Bluegrass Music Certificate students choose one applied bluegrass music course (vocal, guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, fiddle, or dobro), and courses in Appalachian music traditions, the business of music, recording and engineering, and more.
Notable performances by the Glenville State College Bluegrass Band have included the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree (one of the longest running live radio broadcasts on WSM Radio in Nashville), at the World’s Famous Station Inn, John A’s Restaurant, WWVA Wheeling Jamboree, and The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. The group also performs and demonstrates at many schools, fairs, festivals, weddings, and special occasions throughout the state of West Virginia.
The Bluegrass Band consists of a core group of students who are enrolled in the certificate program, as well as other students who are invited or wish to participate in the group. Performance with the Glenville State College Bluegrass Band satisfies the students' ensemble requirement for the certificate. Both the bluegrass curriculum and the bluegrass band require auditions for admission.
