Students & Parents

On Monday, March 23, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice instituted a “stay-at-home” order effective at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 24. As part of that order, all state higher education institutions are expected to continue delivery of instruction to students and to provide essential services to those students who must remain on campus to complete their academic coursework. GSC is implementing the following actions to continue to ensure the health and well-being of students, employees, and members of the community. As new information is received from the Governor’s office and/or the WV Higher Education Policy Commission, these actions will be modified. IMPORTANT: Spring semester coursework will continue as scheduled in an online or alternate delivery format effective March 30.

Residential students who left campus for spring break will not be allowed to return to campus as a residential student until further notice. As an enhanced precaution, no student from New York, California, Washington, or Louisiana will be permitted to be on campus for any reason.

Students are urged to stay home until it is safer to travel. Items left in residence hall rooms will remain secure until such time that students are able to return to campus to retrieve them. IMPORTANT: After Friday, April 3 no student will be granted access to the residence halls until the end of the spring semester or further notice. A student who believes they must to return to campus to collect essential possessions must abide by the following guidelines:

  • Due to the health screening requirement, students must schedule an appointment Monday through Friday ONLY (no weekend access) between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Schedule an appointment now. (No appointments will be granted after 4:00 PM on Friday, April 3; items left in the residence halls will be safe)
  • Students must complete a free on-site health screening by Minnie Hamilton Health Systems prior to being granted access to any GSC facility. Persons who fail a health screening will not be granted access and may be subject to further testing.
  • Students must report to the Residence Life office in Goodwin Hall in order to gain access to any residential facility as key access codes have been changed and doors will be locked.
  • Only one additional person will be allowed in campus residence halls to assist each student.
  • All parties must wear approved protective gloves and masks (provided) while in all campus facilities.
  • When possible, the student should avoid contact with other members of the campus community.

Student Support and Services: GSC faculty and staff will continue to conduct regular business, as much as possible, through work-at-home services. You can access a directory of employees by clicking here.

Students who need more information on how to access and navigate Blackboard (the online learning platform used at GSC) can click here for tutorials. You may also contact GSC's Brightspace help desk at Brightspace.Help@glenville.edu or by calling (304) 462-6449. Blackboard also has its own YouTube Channel full of short video tutorials or you can visit the Blackboard Help Website. If you would like to speak with someone via phone, email, Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams, please feel free to contact a GSC Academic Success Center (ASC) advising team member at Academic.Success@glenville.edu with your preferred method of contact and contact information.

The RFK Library will be closing its physical location until further notice, but many library services are available online:

  • WV Deli
    • Login with your campus ID number and date of birth in DDMMYY format, each patron has access to e-books and audio books 24/7. The Overdrive App works with WVDeli and is available at the Google Play Store, Apple Store, and Windows Store for free.
  • Databases
    • Ebsco and other additional databases are available online. From the All Ebsco Databases link (select Ebscohost Web), you can see the addition of Academic Search Complete, SportDiscus, Business Source Complete, and others at the bottom of the page. All our current Ebsco subscriptions can be searched by checking the Select All box near the top of the All Ebsco Databases page.
    • Proquest Criminal Justice, Learning Express Library for test prep, JSTOR, and WorldCat are also a part of our holdings and will continue to be available to all GSC students, faculty, and staff through the appropriate link on the databases page.
    • (Project Muse) While GSC does not typically subscribe to any Project Muse products, they have opened up a large percentage of their holdings to the public during the Coronavirus outbreak. This is an Arts and Humanities database.
  • Inter-Library Loans
    • Inter-library loan service will be active during this time. It is important to note however that many external libraries are completely closed and some interruption in postal mailings may create longer wait times for materials. Please include your physical mailing address in the (Other) space at the bottom of the form so that materials can be shipped directly to your homes.
    • Journal articles can also be provided through inter-library loan. These are typically requested and supplied electronically so there should be little interruption in these types of requests.
    • Regular circulating materials (visit http://nlnapp.clark.lib.wv.us/ and select Glenville State College from drop-down menu) will also be available to be shipped to students and faculty from our facility. Requests for these materials should be submitted through the Inter-Library Loan form. Weekly trips will be made to the facility to retrieve materials and get them out to our patrons. Materials can be returned by mailing to RFK Library, 100 High Street, Glenville, WV 26351 or dropped off in the physical book-drop outside the building near the front doors.
  • Information Literacy/Reference sessions
    • If there are any questions regarding any of our resources, please contact the Library Director, Jason Gum, at jason.gum@glenville.edu
    • Individual reference sessions with the professional librarian can be scheduled through this e-mail and can be held through a phone conversation, Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams. Library staff will respond to any question within 48 hours during the Monday-Friday work week.

Academic Advising & Registration for Fall and Spring 2020: Advising will begin as previously scheduled, March 30 – April 10. Keep in mind that many faculty will be teaching remotely (off campus) while courses are being delivered online, so be sure to communicate with your advisor to discuss the best way to communicate with them for advising. Students will need to communicate with their academic advisor in order to obtain a PIN that will permit them to register during priority registration. Priority registration for summer and fall terms is on track to begin Monday, April 13.

Counting College Students in the U.S. Census: If you're a college student who normally lives at school, you should be counted at school even if you're currently living somewhere else due to Coronavirus issues (GSC will take care of counting you in our institutional survey with the Census Bureau). If you have other living arrangements while attending college (in non-college-owned housing), you will need to respond to the 2020 Census. If you have roommates, they should be included in the response. This can be accomplished at www.2020Census.gov if you're not able to readily check your mail at that address. If you usually live at home with your parent/guardian, college students should be counted in their Census questionnaire for that household.
