GSC Falls at the Hands of Lindenwood 24-28

Demetrius Quarles had five tackles on the night for the Pioneers defense

St. Charles, MI – The Glenville State Pioneers lost a heart breaking game tonight at the hands of the Lindenwood University Lions, 24-28.

The Pioneers had a commanding lead heading into the fourth quarter, 24-7, but soon saw that disappear as the Lions scored 21 straight points to pull off the victory over GSC 24-28.

On the Pioneers first possession of the game, the G-men drove the ball 70 yards as Colston Bayless gave them the early lead with a 22 yard field goal, 3-0.

The Pioneers would score again in the first, when Derek McRae had a touchdown run from 1 yard out as GSC took a 10-0 lead.

GSC would find the endzone in the second quarter at the 2:07 mark, as Darold Hughes hit Robert Jiles for a 36 yard touchdown pass putting the G-men up 17-0 heading into halftime.

The Pioneer defense held the Lions scoreless in the first two quarters of the contest.

The Pioneers scored again in the third quarter when Rahmann Lee scored on an 18 yard run giving GSC a 24-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Lions defense would come up big as they stopped the Pioneers offensive drives several times, while the Lindenwood offense would go on to score 21 fourth quarter points.

The Pioneers had one last chance with 2:59 left to play but after an incomplete pass on a third and thirteen, GSC would then go for it on fourth down but ended up throwing an interception as the Lions walked away with a huge 28-24 victory over the Pioneers.

Freshman running back, Rahmann Lee, rushed for 165 yards on 27 carries and scored a touchdown while Derek McRae ran the ball 13 times for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Darold Hughes went 22 for 34 for 215 yards with one touchdown and a late interception.

Hughes’ favorite target was Robert Jiles , he caught 6 balls for 79 yards and a touchdown, Rahmann Lee hauled in 5 passes for 41 yards, and Orlandus Harris caught 5 passes for 40 yards.

James Johnson led the Pioneers defense with 7 tackles while Demetrius Quarles and Brandon Absher both racked up 5 tackles on the night.

Lindenwood was led by Denodu O’Bryant with 72 rushing yards on 16 carries and 3 touchdowns.

Ben Gomez went 21 for 37 for 287 yards, while Andrew Helmick caught 8 passes for 114 yards.

Cody Fogle led the defense with 9.5 tackles.

The Pioneers are now sitting at 1-3 (1-0) on the season. They return to action next Saturday, September 29th when they travel to West Liberty for their second conference match up of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
