Shepherdstown, WV – The Glenville State College Pioneer football team suffered a tough conference loss at Shepherd, 34-23.
The Pioneers defense would step up big early in the contest. On the Rams first drive, GSC cornerback Demetrius Quarles, would pick off Rams quarterback Bobby Cooper and return it 59 yards to the endzone. This gave the Pioneers a quick 7-0 lead at the 13:02 mark in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff the Rams would fumble the kick return as GSC’s Emmanuel Hernandez would recover the fumble for the G men. However, the Pioneers would not be able to find any points on the Rams turnover as Colston Bayless would miss a 41 yard field goal attempt.
Shepherd would then take the ball and drive 76 yards on 12 plays as Bobby Cooper would hit William McKenzie for a 20 yard touchdown. This allowed the Rams to tie it up at, 7-7 with 3:43 left to play in the first quarter.
The Rams would then take their first lead of the game at the 7:48 mark of the second quarter as Allen Cross scored on a two yard run, putting the Shepherd up 14-7.
But the Pioneers came right back and scored on their next possession as Justin Feagin would connect with Robert Jiles for 63 yard score at the 5:44 mark in the second quarter. The Pioneers and Rams would head to halftime tied at 14-14.
The Pioneers would score first in the third quarter as Colston Bayless would hit a 34 yard field goal. The field goal would put the Pioneers up 17-14 with 10:00 left to play in the third quarter.
The Pioneers would hold onto a 17-14 lead as they headed into the fourth quarter.
The Rams would find the endzone and take a 20-17 lead as Allen Cross would score from three yards out. But the Pioneers would block the PAT as they kept it a one possession game.
GSC would then retake the lead, 23-20 with only 1:59 left to play as Justin Feagin would hook up again with Robert Jiles, this score coming from 36 yards out. But the Rams would block the PAT still keeping the game a one possession game.
The Rams took their next possession and drove it 67 yards in only three plays as the retook the lead 27-23, with only 1:38 left in the game.
The Pioneers, however, would have one more chance but after quarterback Justin Feagin was injured, Tony Guidugli would enter the game for a play but was picked off by the Rams as they would take it to the endzone as the Rams would win the game 34-23.
The Pioneers only rushed for 74 yards on the day while the defense allowed the Rams 120 rushing yards.
The Pioneers had 11 penalties on the day for 87 yards while the Rams had 8 penalties 80 yards.
Rahmann Lee rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries. Justin Feagin went 17 for 33 for 213 yards and two touchdowns.
Feagin’s favorite target on the day was Robert Jiles as he caught 5 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Orlandus Harris also caught five passes for 50 yards.
Devin Cain led the Pioneers defense with 8.5 tackles, James Washington had 7.5 tackles with 2.0 for a loss and a sack on the day, also Demetrius Quarles had an interception returned for a touchdown on the day.
Allen Cross led the Rams ground attack with 67 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns.
Bobby Cooper went 15 for 24 for 248 yards and a touchdown.
Larry Lowe hauled in 6 balls for 114 yards while Billy Brown caught 3 passes for 51 yards.
Dominic Tolson had nine tackles and an interception for Shepherd while A.J. Parrish had 7.5 tackles.
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, November 11th at home when Seton Hill comes calling as the Pioneers will celebrate Senior Day. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
