Glenville, WV – In the first game of Tuesday night’s double header the GSC Lady Pioneers battled WVIAC foe Wheeling Jesuit.
In the early minutes of the first half both the Lady Pioneers and Cardinals battled back and fourth.
But GSC would jump out to a 11-4 lead at the 17:03 mark as Kenyona Simmons would connect on a layup.
However the Cardinals would battle back and take their first lead of the game 16-15 at the 14:07 mark.
Then the Lady Pioneers would turn up their defense as they would go on a run at the end of the first half, as they took an 11 point lead, 57-46.
In the second half the Lady Pioneers never looked back as they cruised to a 27 point victory, 113-86. The closest that the Cardinals would get in the second half would be eight points.
Glenville State’s defense forced 25 Wheeling Jesuit turnovers and would convert them into 27 points.
The Lady Pioneers also won the rebounding battle 60 to 52.
GSC was led by Ginny Mills as she scored 22 points, she also grabbed six rebounds. Kenyona Simmons scored 17 points in the victory. Simmons just missed a double double as she grabbed nine rebounds.
Ashleigh Fossett scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Tiffani Huffman also had a good game as she scored 13 points.
Senior point guard Jelena Elez had a game high eight assists.
The Cardinals were led by Breanna Butler as she scored 21 points.
Jaila Bryant scored 16 points and Jamie Sobczak chipped in with 14 points.
The Lady Pioneers are 3-1 in the early 2012-13 season. They will return to action next Thursday, November 29th when they travel to Bluefield State. Game time is set for 5:30 pm.
In the second game the Pioneer men’s team battled the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals in what was a close contest.
Both teams would battle back and fourth until the Pioneers would take an eight point lead, 21-13.
But the Cardinals would take the lead 28-27 at the 8:19 mark in the first half.
After that run the Pioneers would make a run of their own as they would score the last 10 points of the first half and go to halftime with 46-36.
In the second half the Pioneers would extend their lead to 14 points.
However Wheeling Jesuit would battle back and pull within two points as Ben Siefert hit a layup, making it 85-83 GSC with only 18 seconds left to play.
After a Wheeling Jesuit foul would send Jamel Morris to the free throw line. Morris would then drill both as the Pioneers held on for an 87-83 win.
The Pioneers bench outscored the Cardinals bench 25 to 2.
Lamar Mallory led GSC with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jamel Morris scored 15 points while Kevin Gray scored 14 points and pull down eight rebounds.
Also for the Pioneers DJ Blanks had a terrific game as finished with a triple double, scoring 12 points, pulling down 12 rebounds, and handing out 13 assists.
The Cardinals were led by Ben Siefert as he scored 21 points and handed out seven assists.
Recardo Gaddy scored 19 points while Darin Harris chipped in with 18 points.
With the win the Pioneers start 3-1 and 1-0 in the WVIAC Conference. This is the first opening WVIAC victory for GSC since 2004.
They return to action next Thursday, November 29th when they travel to Bluefield State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
