Salem, Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers softball team fell short in their first round game against Concord University in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, 7-8.
Concord University would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, however GSC would come right back and take their first lead of the game in the top of the third inning after Carly Caldon scored on unearned run and Morgan Scarpellini hit a two run homerun as the Lady Pioneers took a 3-2 lead.
Concord then tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Pioneers would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning after Carly Caldon singled scoring Raven Greer as GSC went up 4-3.
Concord would have a huge inning in the bottom of the fourth as they scored five runs to take an 8-4 lead over the Lady Pioneers.
However the Lady Pioneers would not be done as they tried to mount a comeback. GSC would score one run in the top of the sixth inning to pull within three, 8-5. The Lady Pioneers would then score two more runs in the top of the seventh as they pulled with one, 7-8, but would end up losing by the same score.
Morgan Scarpellini led GSC as she went 2 for 4 with homerun and 2 RBI’s while Kayleigh Huck went 1 for 4 with a homerun and 2 RBI’s.
Sam Weaver pitched four innings for GSC as she allowed 8 hits, 5 runs, walked 3 batters, and struck out 2 batters.
The Lady Pioneers will play Friday, May 2nd at 2:30pm opponent TBA.
