Softball Swept at Shepherd

The Lady Pioneers traveled to Shepherdstown, WV on Friday, April 13th to take on the Lady Rams of Shepherd University.  Unfortunately, Shepherd came out on top in both contests to put the Lady Pioneers at 12-24 overall and 10-8 in WVIAC play.

In the first game, the Pioneer batting order featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell at short, Meagan James at third, Stacy Mack in center field, Beth Moore at first, Jade Jean designated hitter, Amy Carte in right field, Candice White catching, Karly Eskew in left field, and Kayla Shobe on the mound.

GSC scored 1 run on 1 hit in the 2nd inning.  With 2 outs, Jade Jean drew a walk, and was brought in when Amy Carte doubled down the left field line.  Shepherd was held scoreless until the 5th inning, when they scored 4 runs on 4 hits.  During the bottom of the 5th inning, Mandy Parkulo took over on the mound for the Lady Pioneers.  The Lady Rams scored 3 more runs in the 6th, on 2 homeruns.

In the second game, the Pioneer line-up changes included Jade Jean at first, Kayla Shobe as designated hitter, and Tiffany Bush on the mound.

Shepherd scored 1 run in the 1st, and 3 runs in the 2nd.  GSC answered back in the top of the 3rd inning by scoring 3 runs on 2 hits.  Karly Eskew started things off with a double, but was thrown out at third when Leanne Harris reached on a fielder’s choice.  Lacey Powell reached on an error by the Rams’ right fielder that allowed Harris to reach third.  Meagan James struck out for the 2nd out of the inning.  Then, with 2 outs, Stacy Mack cleared the bases with a 3-run homer.  Jade Jean fouled out to the first baseman to end the inning.

The bottom of the 3rd and the entire 4th inning was scoreless for both teams.  GSC took the lead in the 5th by scoring 2 runs on 2 hits and taking advantage of 3 SU errors.  With 1 out, Leanne Harris reached on an error by the Ram first baseman, then took second on a wild pitch.  Lacey Powell doubled to bring in Harris.  The Lady Rams made a pitching change to try to stop the Lady Pioneer momentum, but Meagan James reached on an error by the pitcher.  Deidra Wallace came in to pinch run for James.  Stacy Mack singled to center field to score Powell and advance Wallace to second.  The Rams made another pitching change, and this time it worked as Jade Jean and Kayla Shobe both popped up to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Rams retook the lead by scoring 2 runs on 1 hit ( a 2-run homer).  The Lady Pioneers failed to score in the top of the 6th despite 2 Ram errors that led to 2 GSC baserunners stranded at the end of the inning.  In the top of the 7th, the Lady Pioneers had opportunities again to score, but couldn’t manage to take advantage of 1 hit and a batter hit by pitch.

The Lady Pioneers’ game at WV State, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been moved to Thursday, April 19th at 6:00 pm.  GSC’s next competition will be at Salem International this Wednesday, April 18th.  Game time is 2:00 pm.
