Softball Sweeps Davis & Elkins

The Lady Pioneers hosted the Senators of Davis & Elkins College today, and came out on top in both contests.  GSC won the first game 4-3, and took the second game 2-1.

In game one, the Lady Pioneer batting order featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell at short, Meagan James at third, Stacy Mack in center field, Beth Moore at first, Lorrie Chaperon designated hitter, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, Candice White catching, Deidra Wallace in right field, and Karly Eskew on the mound.

GSC scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Leanne Harris singled, and Meagan James homered.  The Lady Pioneers scored again in the fifth when Candice White reached on a Senator error.  Leanne Harris reached on another error by the D&E defense, and White scored.  The Lady Pioneers made a pitching change in the sixth inning when Karly Eskew gave up a single.  Mandy Parkulo took the mound for GSC to finish the sixth and the rest of the game.  D&E tied the game in the top of the seventh when they had runners reach base on GSC errors that were later brought in by a series of Senator singles.

With the score tied 3-3, Kayla Shobe pinch hit for Jessica Gilchrist and singled.  Alysha Lavey came in to run the bases for Shobe.  Candice White sacrificed to move Lavey to second.  Jade Jean pinch hit for Deidra Wallace and grounded out to third, and Lavey advanced to third.  Leanne Harris’ single scored Lavey to win the game for GSC 4-3.

In the second game, the Lady Pioneer batting order featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell in left field, Meagan James designated hitter, Stacy Mack in center, Kayla Shobe at third, Lorrie Chaperon at short, Jade Jean at first, Candice White behind the plate, Alysha Lavey in right, and Mandy Parkulo pitching.

The Lady Pioneers scored first in the second inning when Stacy Mack reached first on an error by their short stop.  Kayla Shobe’s sacrifice bunt moved Mack to second, and Lorrie Chaperon’s single scored Mack to make the score 1-0.  Both teams’ defense and pitching were strong, as neither team scored until the Pioneers gained another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lacey Powell singled, and Meagan James reached on a D&E error that allowed Powell to take third.  Meagan James stole second to bring Stacy Mack to the plate with runners on second and third.  Mack reached on another D&E error, and Kayla Shobe’s single scored Powell to make the score 2-0.  The next two Lady Pioneer batters struck out, stranding three base runners.

The Senators threatened in the top of the seventh when they scored one run, but that would be all the scored as the Lady Pioneers finished the inning only giving up one to take the second game by a score of 2-1.

The Lady Pioneers take to the road to face Wheeling Jesuit University tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
