Softball Splits with West Liberty, Wins Both Against Concord

After facing several tough opponents down south on their spring break trip, GSC was ready to come back to West Virginia and put their experience to good use against conference opponents.  The Lady Pioneers performed well, splitting their double header with West Liberty on Wednesday, March 21st and winning both against Concord University on Thursday, March 22nd.

In game one against West Liberty, GSC started (in batting order) Leann Harris at second base, Lacey Powell at short, Meagan James at third base, Beth Moore at first, Kayla Shobe pitching, Lorrie Chaperon as designated hitter, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, Stacy Mack in center field, Candice White catching, and Deidra Wallace in right field.

Neither team was able to score during the scheduled seven innings, and GSC stranded 2 runners.  In the top of the eight inning,  West Liberty put two runners on after Kayla Shobe struck out the first batter for the Hilltoppers.  Shobe had faced 27 batters and struck out 4, and had given up 5 hits.  Mandy Parkulo took the mound for the Lady Pioneers, and West Liberty’s next batter reached base on an error by Meagan James, which left Parkulo facing the next Hilltopper hitter with bases loaded.  That hitter singled, scoring 2 for West Liberty.  Unfortunately for the Lady Pioneers, the next batter for West Liberty doubled, scoring 2 more runs to bring the score to 4-0.  GSC got out of the inning on the next two batters with defensive plays by Harris at second.

The bottom of the eight found Lorrie Chaperon at the plate for the Lady Pioneers.  Chaperon singled, then advanced to second on a past ball.  Jessica Gilchrist was out on a fly ball to center field.  Stacy Mack was next up to the plate, and her single scored Chaperon.  Candice White flied out to center field, and Leanne Harris grounded out to second base.  The final score, in eight innings, was GSC 1, West Liberty 4.

In the second game against West Liberty, Coach Moore’s line-up changes were moving Beth Moore to designated hitter, Karly Eskew to first, and Mandy Parkulo stayed on the mound for the Lady Pioneers.  GSC held the Hilltoppers to no runs in the first, and then got on the board as Stacy Mack homered with Meagan James and Beth Moore on base.

Neither team would score again until the fifth inning.  Candice White walked to reach first, and was moved to second on Deidra Wallace’s sacrifice bunt.  Leanne Harris got on base due to an error by West Liberty’s pitcher, and then advanced to second with White scoring GSC’s fourth run of the game.  Harris was caught stealing when she tried to take third, and Lacey Powell struck out to end the inning.

West Liberty threatened in the sixth but stranded 2 runners, and they stranded another runner in the seventh.  Glenville State picked up their first WVIAC win of the season with a final score of 4-0.

The Lady Pioneers had a short turn-around as they faced the Mountain Lions of Concord University the very next day.  GSC opened with Tiffany Bush on the mound, Candice White catching, Beth Moore at first, Leanne Harris at second, Meagan James at third,  and Lacey Powell at short.  In the outfield, Jessica Gilchrist played left, Stacy Mack center, and Deidra Wallace right field.

The first two innings were uneventful as neither team scored.  In the third, Concord drew first blood as they scored 3 runs on 2 hits and 1 GSC error.  Mandy Parkulo took the mound to face the final batter of that inning.  GSC scored one run in the third as Leanne Harris singled and Meagan James’ double brought her in.  Alysha Lavey came in to run the bases for James, but was stranded as Beth Moore flied out to the short stop.

GSC threatened the Mountain Lion lead in the sixth inning, but the Lady Pioneers stranded both baserunners and came out with nothing.  Glenville State headed into the seventh inning down three runs with a score of 1-3.  Deidra Wallace was up first in the seventh, but grounded out to the third baseman.  Leanne Harris and Lacey Powell both singled, and both advanced on a past ball to bring Meagan James up to bat with runners at second and third.  James came through as usual, slamming a double that scored both Harris and Powell to tie the score 3-3.  Beth Moore reached first and James third on an error by the Mountain Lions’ short stop.  Stacy Mack singled to score James and win the first game for the Lady Pioneers 4-3.

The second game of the double header was all Pioneers, as GSC exploded at the plate to win 12-3.  Coach Moore’s changes in the second game included Lorrie Chaperon at short, Jade Jean at first, Kayla Shobe pitching, Amy Carte as designated hitter, and Alysha Lavey in right field.  The Mountain Lions seemed to be in charge as they scored 3 runs in the first inning on 3 hits; Concord capitalized on 2 Lady Pioneer errors.

The Lady Pioneers came out strong on offense in the first inning, as Leanne Harris singled to start things off.  Harris stole second, and then advanced to third on Lorrie Chaperon’s single.  Chaperon stole second to bring Meagan James to the plate with runners on second and third.  James’ single scored Harris and advanced Chaperon to third.  Stacy Mack homered to clear the bases.  Jade Jean singled, and Kayla Shobe flied out to center field.  Jessica Gilchrist singled to move Jean to second.  Candice White singled to score Jean and advance Gilchrist to third.  The Mountain Lions’ coach changed his pitcher to no avail, as she managed to strike out Amy Carte, but pitched a ball into the dirt to allow Gilchrist to score.  Leanne Harris ended the inning when she hit a ground ball to the pitcher.  The Lady Pioneers scored 6 runs on 7 hits and stranded 1 runner.

The Lady Pioneers were strong on defense in the second, facing three Mountain Lion batters and sitting all three down.  GSC scored two more runs in the second as Lorrie Chaperon started off with a double.  Meagan James reached firstand advanced Chaperon to third on an error by the CU short stop.  Stacy Mack reached on another error by the short stop and Meagan James advanced to second.  Jade Jean struck out, and Kayla Shobe reached on a fielder’s choice as the Mountain Lions threw Chaperon out at the plate.  Jessica Gilchrist singled to score both James and Mack.  Candice White struck out to end the inning.

The Lady Pioneers scored 1 in the third, as Meagan James’ single scored Alysha Lavey, who reached first on an error by the left fielder and was advanced to second on Leanne Harris’ sacrifice bunt.  Stacy Mack and Jade Jean both flied out to end the inning.  GSC held Concord scoreless again in the fourth, and scored 3 more runs.  Kayla Shobe reached first on an error by the first baseman.  Lacey Powell came in to pinch run for Shobe.  Gilchrist’s sacrifice bunt advanced Powell to second, and Powell’s heads up baserunning found her taking third as the Mountain Lions didn’t cover third base.  Candice White’s single scored Powell.  Amy Carte singled to move White to second.  Leanne Harris struck out, and Lorrie Chaperon walked to load the bases for Meagan James.  James doubled, scoring White and Carte.  Stacy Mack walked, but Jade Jean struck out to end the inning.

Concord managed to single after their first two batters hit to Kayla Shobe for two easy outs.  Their last batter grounded out to second base, and the Lady Pioneers took the second game of the double header by a score of 12-3.  The Lady Pioneers are now 3-1 in WVIAC play.  Weather permitting, they will face Davis & Elkins Sunday.  The game has been moved to Glenville, and will start at 2:00 pm.
