(Glenville, WV) – Tryvan Leech scored 32 points as the Glenville State Pioneers rallied from a 12 point 2nd half deficit to defeat Concord University, 84-80, tonight in WVIAC MBB action from Lilly Gymnasium. Leech connected on 10 of 16 field goals including seven three pointers, as he led four Pioneers in double digits. Anthony Kimble contributed 17 points and seven rebounds as the improved to 9-15 on the season and 7-10 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Lions were led by Dannie Parker’s 25 points and 10 rebounds. Matthew Parker added 17 points, including five treys and Anthony Lansdowne chipped in 16 as CU fell to 12-12 overall and 7-10 in WVIAC play.
The Pioneers quickly opened the game, erasing a 4-3 deficit with a 15-6 run to grab an eight point advantage, 18-10 with 10:33 to go in the half. A triple by Leech and back to back 3’s by Marcus Catney would fuel the spurt.
Trailing 21-13, the Mountain Lions would run off up eight points in a 1:30 to tie the ball game at 21-21 all. Parker would connect on back to back 3’s to jump start the run.
Three minutes later Concord would pull away from a 26 all deadlock quickly stretch the lead to 36-28, with 1:14 to go on a Lansdowne triple, and a trey and layup from Parker.
However the Pioneers would not go into the locker room quietly and would close the margin to 36-33 at the break, on three free throws by Leech and a pair from Kimble.
The Pioneers shot 47.8 percent from the floor and connected on 6 of 14 (42.9%) from the three point line in the half.
The 2nd half would open with a Catney three point -play and then it was all Concord over the opening 13 minutes of the 2nd half. CU would slowly extend the margin to its highest point at 12, and the Mountain Lions would find themselves leading 70-59 with 6:04 to play.
Glenville State would then catch fire, as Kimble would drain a three and then Leech would drop back to back triples and a fast break layup off an Allen Boyd steal to cap off an 11-0 run in just 1:15, to tie it up at 70.
CU would stop the bleeding as Parker would hit a fade away three from the left corner as the shot clock expired.
Boyd would then hit two free throws, and Kimble would counter back to back Concord turnovers with a layup and a triple to but the Pioneers up for good, 77-73, with 2:28 remaining.
Kimble and Leech each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for Glenville State.
The evenly played matchup saw six ties and 5 lead changes, as well as both teams shooting an even 50 percent from the field, both grabbing 30 rebounds and only one turnover separating the teams (19 – Glenville, 18 – Concord).
The Pioneers made a season best 81.8 percent of their free throws, as they connected on 18 of 22 attempts.
Marcus Catney added 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Allen Boyd came off the bench to chip in 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
