(Glenville, WV) – The Glenville State Pioneers fell to Ohio Valley 100-96 in an overtime thriller tonight at Lilly Gymnasium. Ohio Valley was led by Chris Leborious’ double-double, 31 points and 15 rebounds. Harris Danesi added 21 Points and eight rebounds as the Fighting Scots improve to 6-16 Overall and 5-10 in WVIAC play.
The Pioneers were led by Tryvan Leech’s 27 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Mykail Vibbert added 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting as the Pioneers fall to 8-14 Overall and 6-9 in WVIAC play.
The opening half was a see saw affair that saw sixties and four lead changes as never team could hold a lead. The Pioneers would jump out to an early nine point advantage at 24-15 with 10:55 remaining. The lead was fueled by a quick 11-2 spurt, highlighted by back to back triples from Leech.
Glenville State would hold the lead until late in the first as Ohio Valley, trailing 38-32 with 3:47 to go, would 16-8 to close the half, and go into half with a 48-46 lead over the Pioneers.
The 2nd half was much like the first as there were another seven ties and four lead changes. After back and forth 1st five minutes the Pioneers would break away on 13-3 run to find themselves’ leading 70-60 with 10:28 to go in the game.
Ohio Valley would immediately counter with a run of their own, fueled by a Taron Hurst Technical foul, as they would outscore the Pioneers 16-6 over the next six minutes to pull even at 76 all with 4:20 to go.
OVU’s Danesi would complete a three point play to give the Scots a 79-76 lead with 3:31 to play.
Leech would come right back and get fouled on a 3pt. attempt from the left corner. Tryvan would calmly sink all three free throws to knot the game back at 79-79 with 3:15 to go.
Danesi would come right back and grab a rebound off a Stephen Camberis missed three point attempt and convert the put back to give Ohio Valley a two point at 81-79 with 3:00 remaining.
Both teams would have plenty of chances to put this one away but neither could convert. Chase Groves would follow the Danesi put back with two point blank misses. On the ensuing possession, Camberis would miss a layup and after a Aleka Carr offensive board, Leborious would turn the ball over as Grooves would strip him.
Groves however would then be stripped by Camberis as he raced the ball up court.
OVU, looking to work the clock, would turn the ball over on a Leborious offensive foul with 2:06 remaining.
Groves would again come up short on his next jump shot, however Micah Mills would turn the ball over immediately after the Leborious outlet pass. Michael Hurd would strip Mills, and quickly find Vibbert streaking towards the hoop for an easy layup to tie it up at 81 all.
Vibbert would miss the free throw to complete the 3pt play. Ohio Valley would get a great look as Leborious would spin and put up a soft one hander from about four feet out. The shot would just rim out and Allen Boyd would grab the defensive board.
The Pioneers final attempt would go for not as Groves would get blocked going to the hoop causing a shot clock violation on GSC.
Ohio Valley would find Todd Hughes with the inbounds pass at half court. Hughes would take it down the right side and beat Vibbert around the baseline. Hughes layup attempt was blocked by Grooves with two seconds left and Danesi would follow up with a layup, however it was waved off, by the trailing official as time expired before the ball had left his hand.
Allen Boyd would open the overtime period with a three pointer from the right corner, and then it was all Ohio Valley. The Scots would then outscore the Pioneers 15-2 over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach. Leborious would score 10 points and grab four rebounds in the extra frame.
The Pioneers shot an impressive 50 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from the 3pt line, including a school record 15 made three point field goals.
The Scots, who shot 50.8 percent from the field and 44.4 from the 3 point line, held a 43-21 advantage on free throw attempts.
The Pioneers look to rebound as they travel to Charleston to take on the UC Golden Eagles. Tip Off is at 7:30 PM.
