On the night Senior Mallory Menendez would break the 1000 point mark for her career, the Lady Pioneers would go cold down the stretch and fall to the visiting Lady Blue Knights of Urbana University 63-61 in a non league game from Lilly Gymnasium.
Donita Adams would lead all scorers with 22 points as the Jr. connected on 8 of 12 attempts including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Menendez added 14 and Suzi Harvey had 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior Christine DiSabato chipped in with nine points and seven assists with just one turnover as GSC falls to 8-15 on the year.
The Lady Blues were paced with four players in double figures led by Jessica Byrd’s 13 points off the bench. Jalyssa Jackson added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds as Urbana University improves to 16-10 on the year.
The back and forth affair would see six ties and eight lead changes.
GSC would lead by as many as 15 in the opening half, before UU would close the half on a 6-0 run to pull it to 38-29.
Urbana would open the second half with an 8-0 run to pull within a single point at 38-37 with 17:53 to go.
The Blue Knights would see their first lead since the 19:07 mark of the first half after Vanessa Gantz would hit the second of her two free throws attempts to make it 42-41 with 11:39 to play.
Glenville would answer right back with a 7-2 run to put themselves up 48-44 with 9:52 left after an Adams’ three pointer.
UU would grab their 2nd lead of the game at the 6:09 mark on a three from Jackson that would cap off an 8-1 spurt.
Not to be out done, Adams would drain another triple, and DiSabato would hit a free throw to put GSC back up, 58-57 with 5:10 to go.
The two teams would trade made three point baskets, GSC from DiSabato and UU from Sarah Branham, to keep the Lady Pioneers lead at one, 61-60 with 2:56 remaining. DiSabato’s triple would the last field goal of the contest for Glenville.
Urbana’s Enisia Curry would drill a jumper from the right elbow with 2:31 to go to give the Lady Knights the lead for good at 62-61.
Haley Ducey would hit one to two free throws with four seconds left to give you the final margin. DiSabato’s 30 footer would miss left as time expired.
The Lady Pioneers will return to action this Thursday as they play host to Concord. Tip Off is 5:30 p.m.
