Lady Pioneers Go Cold In 2nd Half, Fall To Fairmont State
The Lady Pioneers squandered an 11 point halftime lead losing to Fairmont State 69-54 tonight at Retton Arena. FSU saw four players reach double digits as D&E transfer Cara Waybright dropped 15 point. Ashley Vavrek scored 14, Gabby Gattuso 13 and Samantha Wanichko added 11.
The Pioneers (4-7, 3-3) were paced by Donita Adams’ 11 points and Mallory Menendez’s scored 10. Bench players Suzi Harvey and Beth Deren
would both contribute solid numbers has Harvey would score eight points and six rebounds and Deren would add six points and eight boards.
GSC shot a scorching 52.2% in the opening frame as they raced out to a 31-20 halftime advantage, using an 11-2 run over a five minute span to seize the lead at 21-12. The lead would swell to as many as 13 before settling on the halftime score. Fairmont State was limited to just 20% shooting in route to making only six field goals in the half.
The 2nd half would be a much different story as FSU would score early and often.
The Lady Falcons would score on 10 of their first 12 trips down the floor as they would open they half on a 26-4 run over the 1st 10:19 of the second frame.
GSC would cut the lead to six with 7:11 left on a Menendez triple but would get no closer.
Fairmont St. would put any G’ville comeback hopes to bed with a 15-3 run over the next five minutes.
For the game the Lady Pioneers would shoot 41.3% compared to FSU’s 36.7%. Both teams managed to haul down 30 rebounds, but Glenville St. would be done in by 18 turnovers compared to just seven by the Falcons.
Glenville returns to action on Monday against Lake Erie. The Pioneers were blasted early this season by the Storm, 87-68 back on December 15th in Painesville, OH. Tip off on Monday is at 2pm.
