Institute, WV – The Glenville State Pioneers football team battled back on a windy Saturday afternoon as they erased a 13 point deficit at the end of the third quarter as they defeated the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 30-23 in overtime.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first as they took the opening possession 78 yards on a 15 play dive as Nicholas Ortiz caught a two yard touchdown pass from Ricky Phillips as they went up 6-0. The Pioneers blocked the PAT attempt.
The Pioneers finally got on the board when Colston Bayless connected on a 22 yard field goal as they pulled within three points making it a 6-3 game.
Both teams would then battle back and forth for the remainder of the first half as the Yellow Jackets took a 6-3 half time lead.
The Yellow Jackets then scored to take a 9-3 led at 8:34 left in the third quarter when David Wissler hit an 18 yard field goal.
The Pioneers next drive would then stall as Tanner Collins had to punt the ball back to the Yellow Jackets. The Pioneers defense would then return the favor, as they forced West Virginia State to punt , on the return, Jakharie Murphy was hit hard fumbling the ball as Yellow Jacket’s Tyler Long recovered the ball at the GSC 20 yard line.
The Yellow Jackets offense would run one play as Ricky Phillips hit Nicholas Ortiz on a 20 yard touchdown pass as West Virginia State took a 16-3 lead.
Heading into the fourth quarter GSC was down 16-3 when Head Coach David Hutchison replaced quarter back Steffen Colon with Darold Hughes who jump started the offense.
Hughes calmly guided GSC to three quick scoring drives as he completed a 43 yard, 6 yard, and a 17 yard touchdown passes to receiver Jordan Griffin.
On Hughes second play from scrimmage he hit Griffin on a swing pass as Griffin made several defenders miss as he took it 43 yards for a touchdown for the Pioneers making it a 16-10 game.
The GSC defense would then force a West Virginia State three and out.
Hughes then took the offense and drove 88 yards on nine plays as he connected again with Griffin on a six yard touchdown pass as the Pioneer took a 17-16 lead.
West Virginia State then battled back as they drove three plays for 60 yards when Ricky Phillips hit Josh Johnson on a third and sixteen as Johnson took it 66 yards for the touchdown as the Yellow Jackets retook the lead 23-17 with 7:00 left to go in the game.
Hughes once again guided a four play 35 yard touchdown drive as he connected with Griffin for the third time on a 17 yard touchdown strike, but the Yellow Jackets blocked the point after attempt, deadlocking the game at 23 apiece.
West Virginia State’s Ervin Kent then returned Eddie McKay’s kickoff 66 yards down to the GSC 22 yard line as they looked to go ahead. The Pioneers defense would block a 38 yard field goal attempt with 2:19 left to go in the game.
The GSC offense would throw three quick passes as they went three and out giving the ball back to the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets could not find the end zone as we headed for overtime.
West Virginia State would win the toss and elect to go on defense first.
The Pioneers offense would then turn to Joe Mesadieu as he caught an 11 yard pass from Hughes, had a 10 yard rush, and then had a four yard touchdown run as GSC took a 30-23 lead in overtime.
The Yellow Jackets offense would then take the field knowing they must find the end zone. Ricky Phillips would rush for a 10 yard gain as West Virginia State set up a first down and goal at the GSC eight yard line, but that was as close as they would get to the end zone as Phillips threw four straight incomplete passes as GSC held on to the win 30-23.
Joe Mesadieu rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries as he led the Pioneers rushing attack.
Steffen Colon went 7 for 21 for 99 yards for GSC while Darold Hughes went 11 for 14 for 176 yards and three touchdown passes in only one quarter of play.
Jordan Griffin hauled in six passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns while Mesadieu caught five passes for 63 yards. Jakharie Murphy also played well as he caught four passes for 66 yards.
The GSC defense was led by Nate Ingersoll and James Washington as both recorded 11 tackles while Terry Reese and Max Beaubrun both had nine tackles in the game. Matty Porter and Matt Parker both had fumble recoveries in the game.
West Virginia State was led by Fabian Payne on the ground with 13 carries for 57 yards.
Ricky Phillips led the passing attack as he went 21 for 37 for 246 yards and three touchdown passes. Phillips also carried the ball 12 times for 57 yards.
Phillips favorite target was Robert Jackson as he caught six passes for 68 yards while Josh Johnson caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Nicholas Ortiz also hauled in two touchdown catches in the game.
The Yellow Jackets defense was led by Chris Young with 11 tackles while Tyler Long, TJ Austin, and Raymond Bryan all recorded seven tackles in the game.
The Pioneers improve to 4-3(4-0) on the year and will battle undefeated West Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday, October 22nd as they Pioneers celebrate Homecoming at Morris Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30pm.
